It's Twin Cities Pride this weekend and I'm headed in to do some preliminary setup this morning. It's been raining for days, with some more expected this weekend and 3 of the interstates are closed - what could go wrong? No, don't answer that. At any, Queen of Swords Press will have a table in the Queer Writes Test/Zone (called different things on the map), space #496. I'm "between jobs" (out of work/taking a short break) as of 7/3 so if you can't make it to Pride and are up for buying a book or two, now would be a great time. Library requests help a lot too!

Readercon 34 - I will be attending (please buy a Pride StoryBundle if you can! My half of the curator's fee is funding my trip cash for July and these are some great books. We're also raising money for Rainbow Railroad too!). My schedule is here and I'm on everything from small press publishing to aging in sf to erotica and horror to doing a reading.  Looking for ward to it! Will I see you there? Let's get a meal/snacks.

I am also adding an October trip to Iowa City on 10/11 to accept a posthumous Laura Young Award for Jana from Guild of Bookworkers at their Standards Conference. That will be something of a whirlwind, but if you're in the area, breakfast on Sunday could be a thing.

I have a Seattle Worldcon schedule but it doesn't look quite baked yet. I also apparently promised a debut reading of Blood Moon, (Wolves of Wolf's Point #3) from some months back when I had 10K words...then had to revise and reset in a different character's head. Apparently, there will be a lot of writing in the next couple of weeks to get some things ready for readings at both cons!

And I hardly know how to process it. If you read my journal regularly, you know there's generally a lot of "wild" to choose from, but this is a whole nother level. So right now, in the midst of planning for WisCon (will be there in person! Look for me in the Dealer's Room and around. J is coming with me so my ability to plan before 6:00 is a bit off and I will have to play it by ear), guest blogs and interviews, the new Queen of Swords Press book release, last week's exhausting but wildly successful Rochester MN Pride, and sundry other things, what do I get but a serious inquiry about media rights for Silver Moon? If you've been around in publishing for a bit, you know it's not wildly uncommon to get queries about new books. I've had 2 other inquiries in the past, neither of which amounted to anything. But this is a pretty significant production company! I'm very curious about how they heard of me and my menopausal werewolf novels because my press is still pretty small and I'm hardly a household name in the genre. But I don't want to look too uncool by asking.

That said, the WGA is in the midst of a big strike and while I'm not a WGA member, I don't want to cross the picket line, so I have sent them a copy of the book and a polite note saying that I would love to discuss the possibilities if indeed it might work for them, but will not be signing or negotiating anything until the strike is settled. In the meantime, pretty, pretty egoboo! I don't have any big expectations, but I do have an in to a media rights agent or two just in case something looks more likely. And the strike is settled. Fingers crossed!

In other Silver Moon news, the audiobook edition comes out on 5/30 and is up for preorder now! Blood Moon will be out on 6/30.  I suspect the production company heard about through Tantor's marketing and will ask if I get a chance. And of course, it came out in a German translation through Ylva Press last year so who knows? I admit the whole "smol press publisher plugs the hell out of her menopausal werewolf books, with the help of some awesome fans, and manages to more or less negotiate foreign rights sales and audiobook sales unagented" sounds pretty amazing on paper. But I have to admit that they came looking for me. :-)

Also coming up this week, because it all needs to happen at once: watch this space for the new Pride StoryBundle! Melissa Scott and I have found some gems this year and we are once again designating Rainbow Railroad for our charity. Goes live on 5/31 and runs all the way through June!

I'm doing several short interviews with authors who have books in the year's Pride StoryBundle. Many thanks to A.C. Wise for kicking us off! Check out her blog for her writing  news, interviews with authors like A.J. Fitzwater and Craig Laurance Gidney and her terrific recommendation lists.

Can you tell us a bit about the book you have in this StoryBundle?

Catfish Lullaby is queer Southern Gothic meets weird cosmic horror. Readers meet the protagonist, Caleb, at three points in his life - as a young child, a pre-teen, and again as an adult, as he reckons with the terrible deeds perpetrated by his neighbor in a twisted quest for immortality. It's full of folklore, found family, and family by blood, and it was a finalist for this year's Nebula Award!

What do you find engaging/important about writing LGBTQ/queer fiction?

I write the kind of stories I want to read. I also think it's important to have a multiplicity of queer narratives out there so there's more chance that people will see some aspect of their own lived experiences reflected in the fiction they consume. Stories have the power to build empathy, and hopefully the more people are exposed to queer narratives, the easier it will be for society as a whole to see queer identities as valid, and queer stories as vital.

What books or stories do you have out that readers of this StoryBundle might enjoy?

I have two short story collections, The Ultra Fabulous Glitter Squadron Saves the World Again and The Kissing Booth Girl and Other Stories, published by Lethe Press that were part of past Pride StoryBundles. The Ultra Fabulous Glitter Squadron is a series of inter-connected short stories following a queer found family of heroes kicking ass and saving the world all while looking absolutely stunning. Kissing Booth is a more traditional short story collection, mixing reprints and a few original tales. My debut novel, Wendy, Darling comes out from Titan Books in June 2021, and a new short story collection, The Ghost Sequences, will be published by Undertow Books in August 2021. I am thrilled about both, and I can't wait for people to read them!

Aside from your own work, what are some of your favorite queer reads you would recommend to folks?

I loved The Voyages of Cinrak the Dapper (part of the Pride StoryBundle), it's an utterly delightful and joyous collection of interconnected stories about a dapper, lesbian capybara pirate and her daring crew. Rivers Solomon's An Unkindness of Ghosts is a powerful and painful read, which recreates plantation society on a generation ship. It is both brutal and beautifully written, and I would unhesitatingly recommend it. The Luminous Dead by Caitlin Starling is a wonderful and tense sci-fi horror about cave diving on an alien planet. I would also highly recommend the Transcendent series of Year's Best anthologies from Lethe Press. They're always wonderful!

I could go on, but I'll restrain myself.

I'm curating this year's Pride Month StoryBundle (6/3-7/1/20) and it is, as they say, a doozie. This is some terrific queer fiction by queer authors! And we are once again raising money for Rainbow Railroad, a major nonprofit that works with LGBTQ refugees, as our designated charity. Here's the lineup and pricing - I hope that you'll consider getting one.

For StoryBundle, you decide what price you want to pay. For $5 (or more, if you're feeling generous), you'll get the basic bundle of four books in any ebook format—WORLDWIDE.

Best Game Ever by R. R. Angell

The Counterfeit Viscount by Ginn Hale

A Spectral Hue by Craig Laurance Gidney

Capricious: The Gender Diverse Pronouns Issue by Andi C. Buchanan

If you pay at least the bonus price of just $15, you get all four of the regular books, plus seven more more books, for a total of eleven!

Grilled Cheese and Goblins by Nicole Kimberling

The Armor of Light by Melissa Scott and Lisa A. Barnett

         Floodtide by Heather Rose Jones

The Hollow History of Professor Profectus by Ginn Hale

First of all, I want to thank everyone who bought and/or boosted the Pride StoryBundle! We had strong sales this year and raised over $600 for Rainbow Railroad to assist with their refugee resettlement efforts. Thanks for helping make that happen! :-D

New story out! My historical fiction tale, “By Her Pen, She Conquers,” is set in Regency London at the Drury Lane Theater. Will Penny Armstrong ever get to see one of her plays on the stage? And will anything come of her flirtation with the intriguing Jess? Check out this Regency slice of life tale based loosely on the lives of several real women playwrights from the time period, as read to you by the very talented Heather Rose Jones on her show, the Lesbian Historic Motif Podcast

In personal news, the Furnace Neverending is seemingly done, waiting only upon the final inspections and sign off. And the rest of the bill, of course. Then we get a month to recover before tackling the attic. The bathroom is also now a hideous showcase for its existing flaws and new huge HVAC pipes, so that has to get moved up the list of things to be fixed too. Sigh. But I think central air and much more efficient heat will be nice, so there’s that. I have had some pleasant meals and in the case of last night’s foray to a feminist comedy benefit, hanging out with lovely friends I don’t see very often. And tomorrow, I get to go to a tea/Gentleman Jack viewing party that I’m very much looking forward to! I’m also going to a “Meet the Bees” event at the Tiny Diner this week. I’m making progress on a new story and on my new collection and on a novel and...at any rate, more stuff soon! I am also angry and freaked out and stressed, because I contain multitudes.

Now back to trying to make myself useful and get stuff done.

Xposted from the Queen of Swords Press Facebook because I'm pressed for time. I'm also working on a WisCon writeup so I'll be back to at least weekly posts again soon.

It's here! This year's Pride StoryBundle is out with SCOURGE OF THE SEAS OF TIME, WIRELESS AND MORE STEAM-POWERED ADVENTURES by Alex Acks, a collection from the Glittership Podcast, Bogi Takács' latest anthology, a fantasy novel by K.J. Charles, a game from Amy Griswold and Jo Graham, werewolves from Geonn Cannon and short fiction from Craig Laurance Gidney! Buy the whole bundle at the $20 level and designate a portion of your purchase price for Rainbow Railroad to assist LGBTQ refugees!

The #Pride Month StoryBundle is here! Featuring Queen of Swords Press titles MURDER ON THE TITANIA by Alex Acks and MEDUSA'S TOUCH by Emily L. We raised $1k for Rainbow Railroad last year - let's try and double that!

Our LGBTQ StoryBundle ends tomorrow - thus far, we have raised over $1000 for Rainbow Railroad and their program for LGBTQ+ refugees. This is pretty amazing - many, many thanks to everyone who bought or boosted the bundle! You can still get it tonight, if you've been putting it off, BTW. Some good reading in this batch.

Last week, I was interviewed by author Heather Rose Jones for her Lesbian Talk Show podcast. we had a fund discussion about my work and historical inspiration. That should go live in August. In the meantime, check out her blog and her show.

Last night, I read with a bunch of other authors at the annual Queer Voices Pride Month reading at the Minneapolis Central Library, sponsored by Intermedia Arts, the Hennepin County Library and Augsburg College. This year, there was a resource and book fair, along with the reading. The traffic and mass transit deities conspired to keep our crowd smallish, but the readings were very good, I sold a few books and I got interviewed for the KFAI Radio show Fresh Fruit (airing soon). I made the evening for one of my editors by reading from the magazine he edited (Raymond Luczak, Callisto), which was fun. I also got some nice feedback on the story I read from the audience and the ASL interpreters, which was very cool. One of the great things about last night's reading was the diversity of voices: over half the authors were authors of color, several authors were trans or genderqueer and at least one publicly identified as having a disability. More than one author identified as Muslim American. And the singing was lovely. I also got to see some friends, so I would definitely count the event as a success.

In upcoming events, Rachel Gold and I will be reading together at Boneshaker Books in Minneapolis in September and I'm talking to Quatrefoil Library and DreamHaven about possible events later on this year. Speaking of DreamHaven, I just typed up my first Queen of Swords Press invoice for them: they'll be carrying Silver Moon (new edition) and Out of This World: Queer Speculative Fiction Stories as of tomorrow evening! If you know an indie bookstore that might be interested, please send them our way. I'll be posting a bookstore contact to the web page in the next day or two here.

I've also got some new writing projects in the offing. And there's still time to pledge my Patreon for this month (proceeds going to the Southern Poverty Law Center).

And on a more fun note, I'll be at the Twin Cities Antiquarian Bookfair on Friday, shopping for books. Book dealer (and all around swell guy) David
Christenson will be selling from books from the Lundoff Collection as well as some of Jana's fine bindings and boxes so be sure and stop by the Fairgrounds to check things out. I'm also hoping to do a Lark Toys run with friends, to be followed by 2 days of writing, with only minimal editing and other tasks. Fingers crossed that works out!

Silver Moon: A Wolves of Wolf's Point Novel, is back in print! As noted previously, there are some changes from the original edition: new cover, new subtitle, character name change, the new version is longer and so forth. The story has not been changed nor have the main characters. It's available in all ebook formats. In print, it's available from
Indie bookstores and libraries can order it through Ingram. I'm working toward selling it directly via the Queen of Swords Press website, but we're not there yet.

Speaking of Queen of Swords Press, I just got an acceptance from the Twin Cities Book Festival for October so be sure and look for us there. I'll also have print copies of Silver Moon and Out of This World next week (6/27) at the Queer Voice Pride Month Reading and Book Fair at the Minneapolis Central Library.

Our Pride Month StoryBundle is still chugging along and we've raised nearly $1000 for Rainbow Railroad so far! 9 more days to go.

Other than this, life is a bit of mixed bag. Mystery Foot Pain turns out to be arthritis, which is very annoying. I'm nursing things along but will have to skip going to Pride because I need to get everything settled down before Helsinki, etc. The current round of house projects have wrapped up so now we're on to planning the next ones. I have some fabulous friends, and there we have it. Off to bed now in hopes of getting a decent night's sleep/

SILVER MOON is going to be in print again! Release date is 6/16/17 and Terry Roy has done another amazing job on the interior. Seriously, this and Out of This World are some of the prettiest small press books I've ever seen (even if I do say so myself). I highly recommend her work!

The Pride Month StoryBundle is moving along nicely - it's raised over $500 in the first couple of days for Rainbow Railroad, a Canadian nonprofit that helps LGBTQ+ folks around the world escape persecution. We've got another 18 days to raise some more money though, as well getting some good books out in the world. Please check it out and boost if you're not inclined to buy (or even if you are!).

Apart from this, it's been a bit of a rough weekend. Back spasms that started on Friday afternoon, plus migraines and continued foot pain (I'm getting it checked out this week) and a truly hellacious storm front moving through town meant that I missed Equality March and Rally in St. Paul. The weather was bad enough that they called it on the March, but did hold the rally. It looked like fun but it's likely just as well as I stayed home. Overall, it's been a weekend of whittling away at the giant To-Do list; I'm thinking I need to look at carving out a weekend a month to work on stuff because it's the only way I'll make progress. We'll see if I can swing that.
Apart from that, I did get to go see Wonder Woman earlier this week and I loved it. Now to see if I can get one or two more things done before I fall asleep.

Or re-release day, depending on how you want to look at it!
The new edition of Silver Moon has landed and is available in various ebook formats. We have started work on a new print edition and I plan to have it available in time for the Queer Voices Pride Month reading/book fair at the Minneapolis Main Library at end of June, as well as available in all the usual places. I also need to mention that for the month of June, both the ebooks of Out of This World and Silver Moon will be included in a Pride Month Storybundle including works by Melissa Scott and other fine authors, so if you are a reader who prefers to bundle, that opportunity will be coming up quite soon. I'm finalizing excerpts and such even now. So, cool stuff on the horizon!
