I'll be contacting people shortly.

Firecat - 1 signed copy of Silver Moon, Spirit of the Wolf and a wolf bookmark
Rich - 1 signed copy of Silver Moon, a stuffed wolf and a wolf magnet
Connie -  1 copy of The Dubious Hills by Pamela Dean
Alice - 1 copy of Wolf Songs, Vol. 1 (Wolfsinger Publications)
Chad - 1 copy of Goblin Secrets by William Alexander

I ended up with more prizes than donors, alas, but we still raised over $200 for wolf conservation programs. :-) I think I will try something like this, only more ogranized next year.

I want to thank all of the folks who generously donated prizes: Pamela Dean, S.N. Arly, Therese Arkenberg, Lee Martindale, Kari Sperring, Amber Polo, William Alexander, John Palisano, Kristi Petersen Schoonover, Zumaya Publications and Amy J. Benesch. I also want to thank all the folks who signal-boosted and of course, all those who donated. Finally, I want to thank the other people who contacted me and wanted to donate additional prizes. All of your generosity is greatly appreciated!

Got a nice surprise this morning - the writing site Red Room (http://www.redroom.com/) is featuring Silver Moon as a title to be read today. Not sure how long they keep it on that list but very pleased that it got selected (they tend to weight toward literary novels).

I also just finished a new guest blog on marketing and promoting my first novel - just waiting to hear back from the owner of said blog to make sure we're good to go before I plug it. Right after I sent that in, I saw my sales figures for the first half of the year, which were decent but not as high as I hoped. If I compare them to the last half of 2011, they're very close. If I compare to the first half of 2011, my books are doing much better. The difference being that Night's Kiss sold like the proverbial hotcakes last year, not so much this year. Moon is doing better than Kiss did per month, though. But like most authors, I tend to hope that massive amounts of work put into publicity = direct impact on sales even though I know better and I know it takes awhile (and sometimes, never happens). What I am seeing is big increase in library catalogues which include Moon (17 at last count as compared to 9 libraries with Hellebore and Rue) and nifty things like the Red Room list and the news that it will be included in Hannah Kate's new scholarly study of female werewolves (also check out her new anthology of female werewolf stories -
http://shewolf-manchester.blogspot.com/). In any case, word of mouth is a huge help, so if you liked the book, please tell your friends.

And remember that my wolf conservation fundraiser is still going on: http://catherineldf.dreamwidth.org/259784.html
I going to change the terms so that if you donate, you get to pick from amongst the prizes. I'll do a drawing if more than one person wants the same thing.

So...the wolf conservation fundraiser is not getting quite the response that I hoped for. Several people have donated, but I still have more interesting prizes than I do donors to either wolf conservation effort. And several other authors and artists have volunteered more stuff. But before I take on anything else, I'd like to know what would make this more effective. What would make you want to donate to either wolf conservation effort (Defenders for Wildlife or the International Wolf Center)?

I totally understand simply not having the resources to participate - this is more to get a handle on whether or not I should get more giveaways or just change the structure for those who otherwise might want to participate.

Why this is important to me:
Wolves fascinate me. They have a complex social structure which allows for both pack and lone wolves (usually those looking to find a new territory). They generally mate for life, sometimes including same sex pair bonding. Alphas include both male and female wolves. They are very important to maintaining ecological balance and they are survivors: human hunting and poaching and habitat destruction haven't managed to wipe them out yet. And I wrote that book about werewolves. And I'm writing another one, so I'd like to help give back to make sure that wolves are around for generations to come.

The
International Wolf Center in Ely, MN, has webcams on their resident packs and an excellent website for information about wolves. My mother is still talking about  her trip up there several years later. Donate to help them preserve wolves through education and get entered in the prize drawing here.

So apparently if I don't get enough sleep, I forget how to read calendars. Sunday, the day I picked for the wolf fundraiser kickoff, is actually 7/8, not 7/7. *headdesk* And, of course, I have a full schedule at CONvergence today so I don't have time to post pictures until tomorrow. The drawing will still be on 8/7, but in the meantime, I've added several new prizes" books by Pamela Dean, Will Alexander, Kari Sperring, Amber Polo, 2 volumes of the Wolf Songs series of fantasy and sf about wolves and an anthology edited by Lee Martindale, plus the original 2 copies of Silver Moon plus other things, and a copy of the lesbian werewolf anthology where Silver Moon first appeared. I want to extend another huge thank you to all the authors and editors who stepped forward to participate. They are awesome and you should check out their work.

In the meantime, if you are so moved, I will happily include donation receipts from today onward until 8/7 (and encourage you to keep supporting these and organizations like them. To recap, that's a donation in any amount that meets the minimum donation level to either or both of the following:

Defenders of Wildlife's Campaign to Save America's Wolves

International Wolf Center in Ely, MN

Donate, email me a copy of your receipt and I'll enter you in the drawing for the prizes. If you need to donate by mail, please let me know and we'll work that out. And please spread the word! I'll also continue taking art and book donations through July so if you've got something wolf/shifter-related you'd like to pitch in, please let me know. And thank you!

And now back to CONvergence to do a bunch of panels.

I've added several more prizes and more description to the wolf fundraiser.  I think this is going to be a lot of fun! Huge thanks to the folks who've donated and signal-boosted thus far.

In the meantime, I'm off to CONvergence tomorrow. I'll be reading with the always delightful Kathryn Sullivan and Catherine Schaff-Stump at the Broad Universe Reading at 2PM on Friday/tomorrow. On Saturday, I'll be on an 11AM panel on early women SF/F writers, a 12:30 panel on working with writers from an editor's perspective and a 2:00PM panel on the importance of strong female heroines. My
schedule. Full schedule. Look me up and say hi if you're there. :-)

On Sunday, July 8th, I'm kicking off a month-long fundraiser for wolf conservation. Why? Well, I just wrote a book about a woman who turns into a wolf (Silver Moon) and am working on its sequel so wolves are a big part of my writing life right now. Wolves continue to be endangered and to be far less of a threat than proponents of wolf hunting and eradication programs would have you believe. In short, wolves get a bad rap and, like a lot of other people, I'm pretty intrigued by them and I'd like them to stick around.

I'll be doing a book giveaway of the following (Pictures are posted on my journal entries below):
1 signed pb copy of Silver Moon, plus a copy of
Willow Creek Press' gorgeous Spirit of the Wolf and a lovely bookmark from Northland Visions, my local Native American owned and operated gift shop.
1 signed pb copy of Silver Moon, plus an adorable plushy howling wolf from Stuffed Animal House and a wolf magnet from Northland Visions.

Edited to add (I'm sure that the respective authors and editors might be persuaded to sign these as well :-):
2 pb copies of The Dubious Hills by Pamela Dean. This is a YA novel about all sorts of things, including werewolves. And really what more could one ask?
1 pb copy of WolfSongs Vol. 1, edited by M.H. Bonham and donated by S.N Arly. Anthology of sf/f/h wolf stories including stories by Lyn McConchie, Laura Underwood, Selina Rosen, S.N. Arly and a host of other talented folks.
1 pb copy of WolfSongs, Vol. 2, edited by M.H. Bonham and donated by Therese Arkenberg. Second volume of wolf stories, also from Wolfsinger Publications. This one includes stories by Diane Pharaoh Francis, Irene Radford, Carol Hightshoe, Therese Arkenberg and other fine writers.
1 pb copy of Ladies of Trade Town edited by Lee Martindale. (Harphaven Publishing, 2011). Anthology of fantasy stories about sex workers which includes the weremadam story "Do Unto Others" by Rebecca McFarland Kyle, as well as stories by Mark Tiedemann, Cecilia Tan, Lee Martindale, Rob Chilson and me, as well as a bunch of other authors you should check out.
1 pb copy of Living with Ghosts by Kari Sperring.
A swashbuckling fantasy novel about the city of Merafi and its inhabitants, ghosts, shapeshifters and magic.
1 pb copy of The Shapeshifters' Library by Amber Polo (forthcoming in print 9/12 - winner gets a copy when it's available in print). A lively tale of shapeshifting dogs, werewolves and librarians.

I'd be more than happy to have some other authors and/or artists participate so if you've got something that you've written, created, edited and/or published that's wolf and/or shifter related that you'd like to donate, please let me know (clundoff(at)visi.com) and I'll add you to the drawing.
