Now there's a combo you don't see much. "Golden Compass" is 2 hours of very, very shiny. Well worth seeing and in line with what I can remember from the book.
Coulton is a programmer turned singer songwriter and the man who gave the world "Code Monkey" and "Re: Your Brains". He's got a post up about the concert on his blog - if you look closely at the photo, you can see [personal profile] elisem, Juan and me in the second row. http://www.jonathancoulton.com/
He puts on a great show. :-)

I'm hearing good things about The Golden Compass. Nobody I'm likely to do movies with has read it, but I think I'll try some persuasion. I've only trad the first book, and that quite a while ago.

Jana (who has never read the book) came along with us (who had) and quite enjoyed it. She did have some good insights into Pullman's problem with the deux ex machina effect but we all agreed that it was an enjoyable movie

I was disappointed

by the bad editing of the film, and the fact that the American version heavily de-fanged the anti-catholic church subtext--which in the books was not subtle at all. One of Pullman's stated reasons for writing the series (which is totally amazing) was as an answer to C.S. Lewis and Tolkien and their Christian Allegory thing they had going.

I thought the acting was really good, and I, too, liked the shiny. And they did a good job of making the Golden Monkey creepy as hell, just like it was in the book. *shudder*
