Publishers Weekly mentioned Silver Moon AGAIN today, this time in the article Small Towns, Big Sales: Focus on Romance 2012. Am feeling very, very fortunate. I must admit that in my head, Silver Moon is sort of a cousin of paranormal, rather than setting up shop there, but I'm totally open to some crossover. Then again, it ended up in the Paranormal/Horror category for the Rainbow Awards, while A Day at the Inn, A Night at the Palace and Other Stories is in SF/F, so we'll see how that goes.

In other publication news, Obsession: Tales of Irresistible Desire, edited by Paula Guran, will be out from Prime Books this week. It includes my story "The Snake Woman's Lover," which is not an LGBTQ story and is in the dark fantasy/verging on horror vein. The TOC for this book is...let's just say it's an honor to be chosen: Leiber,Lee, Cadigan, Constantine, Poe, de Lint, and it just keeps going on into squee meltdown. Follow the link to see them all and the very striking cover. :-D

It's been really interesting to do so many guest blogs about "Silver Moon" back-to-back like this. I'm having to think a lot more about my writing process and how to explain it to other people than I've ever had to do before. I think that in the next week or so, I'll try and come up with a coherent post on the good and bad sides of that, but for now, yay, Big Idea! :-D

And we are safely arrived at The Concourse. WisCon coming up.

To kick off #werewolfwednesday, werewolf blogger extraordinaire David Jon Fuller interviews me at his blog As You Were: Metal, Monsters, Mayhem ( I just love saying that).

Last night's reading at
Outwords Books was fun - another small, but enthusiastic audience. People have been buying Silver Moon, for which I am wildly grateful, but it would be nice to see a few more faces at the readings. Outwords is a terrific store - and they now have signed copies of Silver Moon in stock, so if you couldn't make it last night but want to get a copy, please make Carl's day and pick one up over there. I'm quite jealous that Milwaukee and Chicago still have great LGBTQ bookstores and the Twin Cities no longer does.

Took a stroll down to the lake yesterday and wandered by the Milwaukee Art Museum, which was delightful. Today's expedition will be some bookstores downtown and tea at Watt's Tea Shop, as soon as we get it together. The weather's been lovely, the County Clare is charming, and breakfast at The Eatery on Farwell was excellent (huge thanks to our house/cat sitters who make it all possible). Tomorrow, it's off to Madison for the joys of WisCon. Huzzah!

Update on the Amazon situation: I talked to 4 people who preordered and 2 already had their books,1 was told it was being shipped and the other was told she had the option of canceling since they didn't have the book! I tried talking to Amazon directly and they were utterly useless. My publisher has worked out a temporary solution as of this AM so we're hoping there will no more snafus. At any rate, they do apparently have the book, even though they say they don't.

It's HERE!

is always difficult, at least if you're really risking something. Sending your work out into the world to face rejection is a tough road. Sending your work out for reviews can be even harder. Then there's the joy of self-promotion, in which you have to ask people for things. Sometimes, they ask you, which is nice. But if you're new or small press or just new to a given market, you'll get to do a lot of asking. I have my ups and downs with it, both the asking and the results. But today, the asking paid off. I get to do a Big Idea post for Silver Moon on Whatever, author John Scalzi's blog! This is huge, since he gets a phenomenal amount of traffic. I am very grateful to him for sharing some of his bandwidth and taking some of the rest of us along for the ride. And I'm even more grateful that all I had to do to get this to happen was to send him the information he requested, in the time frame he requested, and ask.

(Of course, a few hours later when I was still OMGing about this opportunity, my publisher pinged me re: a certain other very large book blog and their interest in Moon in the wake of the PW review and my immediate reaction was, "No! They'll pull the wings off! It hasn't flown yet!"). Which just goes to show you that writers are pretty tightly wound and not necessarily well-grounded. Yes, the book got sent.

The Big News - Publishers Weekly gave "Silver Moon" a nice review. :-D
It's not posted yet, but here's the excerpt that Lethe is using for the preorder page on Amazon
(http://www.amazon.com/Silver-Moon-Catherine-Lundoff/dp/1590213793/ref=sr_1_5?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1335556000&sr=1-5) and the back cover:
"Deft humor, hints of romance, and well-constructed suspense leaven the occasional sturdy earnestness, while the rejection of toned hotties as the embodiment of supernatural power in favor of women whose lives have prepared them with the wisdom for their new role is refreshing."

Am very pleased. I should mention that "Silver Moon" is also up for preorder on Barnes and Noble.
And there's 2 more days to enter for the chance to win an ARC on Goodreads (just search under "Silver Moon" by Catherine Lundoff).
There's also a couple more days to donate to The Future Fire's "We See a Different Frontier" for a chance to win a signed ARC (see post from yesterday).

"We See a Different Frontier"
From The Future Fire's announcement for the Peerbacker prizes for an anthology of postcolonial sf, from the perspective of the colonized:

Thanks to everyone who has signal-boosted, donated, or interviewed
Fábio or myself for this fundraiser. We're now over half way to our
target (and only 1/3 of the way to the deadline). If we exceed the
target it'll be even better!

To mark this milestone, and thanks to several generous authors, at
least some of whom are Outer Allies, we're having a giveaway draw for
everyone who donates between now and May 1st. See
http://djibrilalayad.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/signed-books-giveaway-draw.html?m=1
for the giveaway details, but the books we have been pledged (*all
signed*) are:

 *  Kelly Jennings’s Broken Slate
 *  Catherine Lundoff’s Silver Moon
 *  Tim Maughan’s Paintwork
 *  Sophia McDougall’s Savage City
 *  Ian Sales’s Adrift on the Sea of Rains

@clundoff There had been something new in her reflection, a flickering of golden eyes and fur, visible for the blink of an eye.

@clundoff Something feral and wild strained its way toward the surface behind her otherwise utterly normal features.

@clundoff What the hell? Becca Thornton closed her eyes, shutting out the hallucination or whatever it was.

@clundoff For more Silver Moon info,
. Thanks for listening/reading!

Have so far managed an hour of yardwork and finished 2 books, Wounds of Passion by bell hooks and Steampunk, the anthology edited by Kelly Link and Gavin Grant. Liked both and posted about them on Goodreads. Then there was kitty quality time, in lieu of writing. Today, there's some follow-up on sundry things: confirming my WisCon schedule, buying tix for Theater Unbound's Julius Caesar and tonight's one-woman show of Dracula at the Black Forest Inn, and hunting down another review site that might go for SIlver Moon. Speaking of which, I've added an author interview stopoff at author Tracy Morris' blog (link in the Where I'll be in 2012 post) for early May.

The tally thus far for scheduled Silver Moon publicity for May and June: 1 author interview, 2 podcasts, 4 readings, 2 conferences (
GCLS and WisCon, plus a Goodreads book giveaway, 2 werewolf book blog reviews requested (they both said yes), 5 review sites contacted thus far (4 out of 5 said yes - waiting on the 5th), one radio show contacted (haven't heard back yet) and one guest blog requested (haven't heard back yet). Just found another book review site that looks promising so contacting them today. And this is, of course, does not include venues where Lethe Press is sending my book (another 6 or 7, I believe). Nor does it include last month's lesbian werewolf podcast or this month's Out in Print interview.

Meanwhile, my day job is starting to look like one of those English manor house mysteries in which dinner guests keep disappearing and everyone else tries to keep a stiff upper lip. Layoffs are falling thick and fast, which is not fun. And I've hurt my foot in some new and unspecified way. But that will not stop me from going to Dracula tonight or going to lunch with a friend tomorrow. It will, however, once more put a dent in shoe-shopping, already massively delayed by the plantar's fascitis problem. Sigh. Off to go run errands and perhaps do some writing. And cleaning. Oh, yes, and making lemon curd. I need another me.

I'm doing a Goodreads ARC giveaway for my forthcoming werewolf fantasy novel "Silver Moon" - view details and sign up here http://tinyurl.com/88uvacn
("Silver Moon" is also available for preorder at Amazon - http://tinyurl.com/75ch4f6).

And such. I am now in possession of some print-ARCS as well as e-ARCS of SIlver Moon and thus am caught up in the exciting panicked cycle of "I need to send one here. And here. And there. And what about these people? Sure, they blew off my last 3 review requests, but surely they'll see the genius of my new book. This time will be different!"

Because I have the aforementioned ARCs, I'm trying a bunch of new things, as is my publisher. Which is, on the one hand, potentially amazing and could result in lots of good reviews leading to sales. On the other hand, my book could also get completely ignored or trashed by a reviewer with a substantial readership. Eek. So I'm attempting to deal with the whole "What if they hate/completely dismiss my book?" thing by going for quantity as well as quality. This is, by and large, easier said than done. Neither I nor my publisher has a huge budget for promotion, so there aren't tons of books to distribute. Nor are there, alas, tons of places which will welcome a book about a. a middle-aged woman wrestling with coming out and turning into a werewolf which b. has a romance subplot in it but is c. basically a fantasy novel with d. no sex in it by e. an author generally known for writing sex scenes. It tends to bump up against the scariness of teh gay and the omigod, it's not erotica, is it? (Aside: As if well-written erotica were just the most terrifying thing ever.)

But nothing ventured, nothing gained. So far, I've set up for a book giveaway on Goodreads (details to follow soon), prepared a press release and an arc to go to the writing show on one of our local radio stations, sent e-arcs to 4 publications/sites that reviewed my previous books and 1 to a werewolf blogger who expressed interest (Lethe is hitting the various and sundry big review sites like PW and Lambda). I've also requested a guest blog slot on a wildly popular blog. I'm wishing that there was a magic bullet to take care of all of this for, but there just isn't. On the bright side, I anticipate getting much better at writing summaries of my novel and press releases for events. Should be an interesting less than 2 months. :-)

which makes me feel like an actual novelist. I'm told the ARC will be winging its way to Publisher's Weekly, which is another first. I'm hoping this book has some good buzz when it's unleashed upon the world.
In the meantime, I've got 2 readings to prep for this week, plus overtime for the day job. None of which is keeping me from fretting about the Lambda Lit Award finalist announcement later on this week. I've had 2 books nominated in the past, neither of them finalling. I'm hoping Hellebore and Rue and A Day at the Inn, A Night at the Palace and Other Stories pave new ground. Lots of cross fingers here.

Had a fine and pleasant time at the con, as per usual. I hung out with friends, did panels that people turned up at, swanned about in my fab steampunk gear from Scoundrelle's Keep (with thanks to my friends who laced me into my corset and were insistent about the sensible heels instead of the foot corset boots), ate dinner and enjoyed all of the things that I appreciate about Marscon each year. Though we did miss the masquerade and a lot of the music, what between one thing and another.

So now, I'm in marathon mode on the galleys for Moon. And contacting folks about reviewing it. And setting up release readings.
Speaking of which, I'm doing two readings this week.
I'll be at
DreamHaven Books, Comics and Art on Wednesday, March 14th from 6:30-7:30 PM, reading as part of the Speculations Reading Series.
And I'll be at the
Quatrefoil Library for Women's History Month on Sunday, March 18th from 1-4PM for a multi-author reading with Ellen Hart, Catherine Friend, Ellen Lansky, Jessie Chandler, Linda Morgenstein and Lyda Morehouse.

Should be an exciting time. Back to the grindstone.

My first novel, Silver Moon, comes out from Lethe Press in May, 2012. Silver Moon is about transformation and discovery and new beginnings. It's also about a divorced middle-aged woman named Becca Thornton who discovers that she turns into a werewolf as she enters menopause. And that she's not the only one. A number of women in her town of Wolf's Point seem to have had the same experience and she's now their newest Pack member. But it's not all protecting the town and running through the woods howling at the moon. There are werewolf hunters in town and they've got Becca in their sights. Join Becca's wild ride this May.

Silver Moon is up for preorder at
Amazon (I know Amazon sucks but unfortunately they drive the sales for a lot of small presses and preorders drive print runs, just saying). I'll also be doing events in Chicago, Milwaukee, Madison (WisCon) and the Twin Cities to celebrate. More updates closer to the big kickoff!
