First, I want to thank all the writers who I asked to do sizable rewrites on their stories for "Haunted Hearths" - you folks did a great job. Book's almost ready to go to the publisher for approval. I know some of you struggled more than others and I really appreciate it. Thank you! :-)

Apart from that, did anyone else out here read "Wicked: Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West"? If so, did you like it? I waded through it last week, more to get it cleared off my bookshelf than anything else. I also wanted to see what the fuss was about. I still have no idea. What a dull, angst-filled pointless slog of a book!
Also didn't love the new Buffy Season 8 graphic novel. Artwork's good, the idea's certainly appealing but the storylines are pretty chaotic and not that interesting. Big disappointment on that, seeing as I loved "Buffy" and Joss Whedon's previous comics foray, "Fray."

On the less disappointing end of things, am liking "The Tall Pine Polka" by Lorna Landvik, at least so far.
And the fever that I've had for the last couple of days appears to have finally cleared up. Huzzah!

I have "Wicked" on my bookshelf too, but haven't read it yet. I will get to it toute de suite, since I have no more classes or marking until January 7!! I love the idea of a retelling of "Wizard of Oz" from the viewpoint of the Wicked Witch & I've heard the musical has been popular. (I wonder if anyone here has seen/heard that.) I'll post an opinion when I have one.

The musical is quite big here - still can't quite believe they got material for it from this novel. Danieele Steele I sort of understand, this, not so much.

I've *tried* to read Wicked...but...I have never been able to make it through...I can't quite analyze why, but...it's not for me, I think.

Can't say I thought it was the most worthwhile effort I've made recently. My rule is that if I buy it new in hardcover or large trade, I have to read it before it leaves the house. The theory is that it keeps me from buying lots more books. It doesn't actually work but I stick with it anyway. :-)

I started Wicked, but found it hard to get into. I thought it might have just been because I wasn't in the right mood (ie too damned grumpy). I plan on picking it up again and giving it another try as I find the idea behind it to be rather intriguing (I like alternate tellings".

We saw the musical last year when it was playing in Toronto and I really did love it - the songs were fun, the story was pretty fast paced and the characters of Elspeth and Glinda were endearing. If it comes to you wherever you may be - I'd recommend it.

I'm going to give the book another chance - perhaps when I get the pile of other books I mean to read pared down a bit more.

You may want to stick with the happy memories of the musical; "fast paced," "endearing" and "fun" do not come to mind to describe this reading experience. :-(

Ugh

Thank you. I thought "Wicked" was a really, genuinely lousy read. I thought I was the only one in the whole country who felt that way. LOL. I mean I finished the book but only because I kept thinking "It MUST get better." But it never did.

And thanks for he heads up on the Buffy comic: I liked "Fray" and "Buffy" too but have been waiting to hear opinions on the graphic novel. Sounds like I, too, would be disappointed with it.

I think it's one of those books people have on their shelves but never read, or start reading and never finish. I gather the show is fun but I figure that got edited. :-)
