Perhaps he's a French werewolf, and he's buying your book as an offering to the lupine goddess of...um...some forest in France, and she's more likely to grant him a wish if the book is signed.

Excellent! I like this better than the other notions to date. I'm picturing a goddess along the lines of the Papal agent in 'Brotherhood of the Wolf' (not recommended, if you haven't seen it. She's the most interesting character in it and she's not on nearly enough). :-)))
