Just realized that I have no idea what I'm excerpting or how we're running the contest for the Thursday chat. Hopefully Jolie and Sherri have an idea. Should be exciting. :-)

Accomplishment for the weekend - finished my alternate history death of Christopher Marlowe story and got it out the door to submit for "Time Well Bent." V. pleased. Now I just need to finish the next story in time for the deadline I had to ask for extension on. Urgh.

We did manage to go catch Richard Thompson last night in St. Paul. It was a great show, though both of us like his acoustic ones better. He rocked out on some fun songs, old and new. I think the most powerful of the new ones is "Dad's Gonna Kill Me" (about Iraq) but I don't think I could listen to it over and over the way I do much of his other stuff.
The down side was that the sound was a lot louder than it needed to be and he likes a long guitar jam when he's amped up. Despite having spent a number of years living with a guitar god, I've never warmed up to them. A minute or two in and I've forgotten what song they were playing and mostly cease to care.
On the other hand, hey, it's Richard Thompson and I can listen to 'Beeswing' and '52 Vincent,'
among others, all day long and still love them. :-)

I don't think "Dad's Gonna Kill Me" will last. It'll date badly once the war is over - y'know, in another 50 years, if you believe Bush.

The sound was, frankly, bad. Faron was complaining about it afterward, and my ears were ringing. Given how acoustically sound the Fitzgerald is, there's no excuse for it. And it's not the first time, either... I caught his solo acoustic show there a couple of years back and it was bad then too. :( For SOUND, I'd much rather see him at First Avenue, with the great system there. But for having a nice seat for my sorry old butt to sit in, the Fitzgerald wins. Not to mention getting to bring my underage daughter. :}

I'm not yet that thrilled with his new album, although I'm giving it a dutiful listen. A lot of the lyrics (not just "Dad's") seem rather one-dimensional and emotionally obvious to me. I hold the writer of "Beeswing" to a higher standard. :( Hearing some of the classics during the show like "Read About Love" and "I Still Dream" just reminded me of the highs he's capable of reaching...

Yeah, admittedly it didn't grab me like some of his other stuff. But then I discovered him during the whole "Linda dumped me and hell is other people" phase and got past it. And I think "Beeswing' is the only interesting thing on 'Mirror Blue' so I figure he's entitled to a few duds here and there.
Did you catch '1000 of Popular Music'? I thought that was a really fun show.

Mirror Blue is one of my favorite albums. But I know that's a minority opinion...

I loved the 1000 Years show! I saw that, and I saw the acoustic show before it, where he played a couple of songs and was obviously toying with the idea.

Yeah, that was a great one. I saw him do his acoustic show at the Zoo a few years back too; also awesome.

Oh fun! Did he sing "Don't Sit on My Jimmy Shands?" That might be my favorite although I do love Vincent as well. (I only have that one album, heh.)

Alas, no. That is a fun one. :-) I like 'Faithless' - it's got some great tunes on it.

The editor for Time Well Bent is V. pleased, too.

I'll try to check out your blog tour thing tomorrow night at some point, although I have no idea how it works. If it's just a matter of posting comments, I may do so, but if it's technically "chat", I've never mastered the form and generally feel run over by a truck when I venture in.

Cool. :-))))
Though given the way the year has gone thus far, the fact that I managed to finish something at all is reason for cheer. Lordy, but I'm tired. :-(
And it ain't over yet.
Tomorrow night should be pretty low key - just posting comments and such. Glad you're coming along for the ride! :-)))
