I feel lots more pain after visiting my chiropracter/acupuncturist? I must do terrible things to myself the rest of the time judging from how I feel right now. Ouch!

The holidays were pleasant, in part because we had excellent company. Hi [livejournal.com profile] elisem! In 4 short days, we got to check out the fab lacquerwork box exhibit at the Museum of Russian Art and watched my favorite Tamil movie (okay, the only Tamil movie I've ever seen :-) "Kandukondain Kandukondain," which is Austen's "Sense and Sensibility" transplanted to contemporary India with much singing and dancing and costume changes. We also managed to attend the giant soiree some of our friends from India held for their kid's birthday (who wouldn't want to invite 150 of their closest friends to their one year old's b-day?), then followed it up with an evening of some of the worst Western cinema has to offer - "Glen or Glenda" and "Blackula." It helps to watch them in that order. Really. Otherwise it doesn't bear thinking about. Poor Bela...
Brunch the next day with jolly companions helped soften the horror.
I did manage to finish a draft of a story, "Three Views of the Maiden in Peril" which needs to go out sometime soon to the lovely editor who asked for one of my fantasy stories without sex in it. But found that I was too fried to do that this weekend. Or to finish buiilding my new website. Ah well.

In other news, my day job has gotten very Italian Renaissance, only with less in the the way of interesting cultural artifacts. It never occurred to me until this weekend that somewhere in the court of the Borgias, there was probably some chamberlain or other functionary wandering around mumbling, "Poison them or don't poison them but make up your mind!" I'm channelling that person now. Very twisted. :-(

how was the lacquer box exhibit? i was muttering to my father about whether or not it would be better than the gift shops at the hotel ukraina (http://www.monstersocks.com/moscow2005/Pages/Hotel_Ukraina_at_Dusk.html), but that's just because i'm naturally snarky like that. i really want to go see it.

okay, now i'm all homesick for russia! i don't think it counts as homesick when i've only ever been there for two weeks, but boy, i really want to go someplace where no one understands me, there aren't enough vowels, and all the food is weird, now. ;)

The lacquer exhibit is gorgeous - well worth checking out. I love the incredible detail work on them (and ended up buying a box from the gift shop that I've been lusting after for a year :-).
They've got a few pieces up on the web - <http://www.tmora.org/eventdata/100105/main.html> and the show's on until the end of the month. Rebecca of Lady Poetesses and I were thinking of going back to see it again some Sunday (her only day off) in Dec.; if you'd like to go with us, let me know.
Where's the Hotel Ukraine? Does it look like that on the inside? Wow!
Though given your criteria for travel plans, you could probably just drive up to the Iron Range for a similar effect. :-)

Very cool! How about Sunday the 10 or the 17th? I'll check and see if one of these will work for her. My email's clundoff@visi.com, FYI.

Well, if you feel in need of some cultural artifacts, I could send you a "poison ring", or at east a facsimile thereof. Functional, depending on the poison you pick.

Would it have real poison in it? :-> I'm trying to avoid becoming a danger to 'self and others'...
On a completely unrelated note, we just got back from seeing 'The Queen.' Helem Mirren rocks (as always)! Quirky little film, great performances - I think you'd like it.

I generally draw the line at transporting poison across state lines, so you'd have to concoct your own.

"The Queen" really does sound good, and it's even playing now in the newly refurbished theater in Amherst, but I stil may not manage to see it until it comes out on DVD. But maybe.
