Here we are on Week 3 of my current "between jobs" adventure! So the big news is that I accepted a job offer yesterday; I'll be working remote for a California company doing data analysis/business intelligence through a contracting company I used to work for a long time back. It's a 3 month contract, with reasonable likelihood of going longer if things go well and it starts in 2 weeks, which gives me a bit more time to deal with the To-Do List o' Doom. On the down side, healthcare benefits don't kick until the 2 month mark so I still need to deal with that. Otherwise, we'll see how it goes. I am massively, chronically burned out from the kinds of work I've been doing for the past few years (and working 60-70 hours a week, between day job, writing, publishing and teaching) and this last round of bad management and nonsense was the last straw. On the other hand, these are amongst the skills I have, the job market is not great, the freelancing areas I'd like to move into are very, very full of good people who don't have the same options right now and this is another part of the IT forest that I think I'll like better. Also, fully remote so no commute time or spontaneous "we decided to call everyone back to the office." Fingers crossed!
Accomplished this week:
  • Finished drafting a new short story that's due this month.
  • Recorded a reading of an Emily L. Byrne short story for a Facebook "campfire" reading.
  • Accepted one manuscript and rejected another; working on contract updates now.
  • Did the Queen of Swords Press P&L and expense tracking for last year (ouch).
  • Followed up on healthcare options, but still need to complete.
  • Interviewed for a job and talked to sundry other people about jobs and referred a few friends who've been on the market for a bit.
  • Started my basic accounting class.
  • Saw The Voyages of Cinrak the Dapper by A,J, Fitzwater, which I published last year and which we hustled our butts off getting the word out about, land on the recommended readings lists for Locus Magazine and the Locus Awards, the Hugo Awards, the Nebula Awards, the Sir Julius Vogel Awards and the Ursa Major Awards (anthropomorphic fiction). Whatever happens, it's been a helluva run for a smol collection of queer joy and I'm super excited for A.J. and our little Queen of Swords Press crew.
  • Started deep cleaning and decluttering the living room.
  • Worked on edits for Blood Moon.
  • Read a submission.
  • Reading Water Horse by Melissa Scott. This is her new queer epic fantasy and I get to blurb it. :-D
  • Went to the Museum of Russian Art (newly re-opened) with a friend.
  • Signed up for my first paid blog tour for Blood Moon and lined up sundry promo and review things.
  • Watched Dickinson (liked!), The Alienist (did not like), Hercule Poirot mysteries and Black Sails (liking!).
And I think that's about it. Working on tax stuff now too so planning on having that for next week's update, along with some other things. If you're going to be at Capricon 41 this weekend, please come to my reading and panels, if you are so inclined!

We are online and doing the Discord and YouTube thing, in all its glory. If you are attending WisCon Online ( registration closed yesterday), be sure and check the Discord channel in the Artists and Vendors chat. I'll be posting a coupon for 15% on 5/22 for all sales over $3 from the Queen of Swords Press website. Does it make up for not getting to have a party to celebrate the launch of The Voyages of Cinrak the Dapper, A.J. Fitzwater and Alex Acks's Wireless becoming a Midwest Book Award finalist? Honestly, no, but hopefully it becomes its own kind of fun. Speaking of A.J., who has just been promoting like a promoting thing, they are doing an AMA on r/Fantasy right now and you can stop by and chat about dapper lesbian capybara pirates and their other work.

And more WisCon: my wife, Jana, is normally in the Art Show and has been happily making new pretties for the last few months. All of those are available in her Etsy: new handmade boxes, journals and her insanely affordable travel journals that come with their own pencil and refill pages.
WisCon is a sizeable chunk of our annual small business income, so if you can afford it and see something you like, please think about buying from us and the other vendors and artists.

If you are not at WisCon, but want to buy books, we are having other sales! In the next few days, I'll be announcing the books and authors for this year's Pride Month StoryBundle, which will kick off on 6/3. Last weekend, I was at Flights of Foundry, which was my first online con. It went quite well and I had a lot of fun. This weekend is WisCon and next weekend is the SFWA Nebula Weekend. I'm not on programming at either of these because I thought I was going to be doing other things, but A.J. will be on a couple of panels next weekend. In June, I'll be teaching Book Promotion on a Budget (COVID-19 version) at the Rambo Academy on 6/14, I'll be doing my annual talk at DreamHaven on 6/17 (online as well as socially distanced in person, bookstore staff permitting),  Rainbow Space Magic (a new LGBTQ con) from 6/20-21 and vending at Twin Cities Pride for the first time in the Virtual Marketplace. Queen of Swords Press now does print as well as ebook direct from the website.

In other news, my broken glasses have been dropped off for replacement, the squirrels are apparently evicted from the soffits and porch roof at great effort and expense, the attic is done (except for the floor) and is lovely, and sundry electrical fixes are happening around the house. So naturally, the washing machine is flooding, the garage door is iffy and the chimney needs repairs. Having the occasional financial/constant stress of having things always in repair or construction mode-related meltdown and trying to get an ton of stuff done, with mixed results. Hoping you all are doing well!

My last week:
  • Turned 57 last Monday, with a mellow birthday at home, good snacks, messages and calls from friends.
  • Tuesday: got a call from the nursing home that they wanted to put my mother in hospice care (she had contracted the flu but had been doing "fine.")
  • Wednesday: get a call in the wee hours of the morning suggesting  I "come visit" my mother NOW. I went over as early as seemed feasible and got thoroughly sprayed down, cleaned and temperature checked. Then I went upstairs to find my mother completely unconscious and hooked up to oxygen. I talked to her nurse, then sat down and read to her for a while from Scaramouche by Rafael Sabatini, which was always one of her favorite novels. Then I said my goodbyes and left. About 30 minutes later, I got the call that she had passed on.
  • Thursday and Friday were spent dealing with the cremation center (I had already bought a cremation package for her) and the nursing home - fortunately, I had set up most things beforehand and they took care of a lot of the administrative stuff. Family friends took on notifying others so I'm down to writing an obituary and sending it out, writing some cards, picking up Mom's ashes later on in the week and trying to figure out how to scatter them in a way that abides by her wishes (she had ambitious plans for her remains, even under the best of circumstances). And picking up her remaining stuff at the nursing home (I'm donating all the clothes to them). Blergh. Was it expected? Yes. Am I okay? Not sure. Quite numb and spent today with a killer migraine.
  • Saturday, I taught my anthology editing class to a small but enthusiastic group.
  • Tomorrow, Monday, April 6th - The Voyages of Cinrak the Dapper by A.J. Fitzwater comes out from Queen of Swords Press. You can get it in ebook everywhere, including direct from us; print is available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, IndieBound and Bookshop.org. It is the author's first book and it is beautiful and cuddly and wonderful. Please buy a copy - it will make you feel better about life. I promise.
  • And tomorrow, back to day job. They gave me a few days off to recover, which helped, but don't feel like enough.  Onward. I will xpost Mom's obituary out here when I get it done.

Though I'm not sure what I'm catching up to, exactly. 13 Gears was good fun and my Not-So-Silent Planet reading went well. I spent the later part of the week being mildly sick, but nothing serious. Lots of exciting publishing news though!
  • I had my usual delightful monthly breakfast with Caroline Stevermer and learned that I am thanked in the  acknowledgments of her new book, which is up for preorder now! The Glass Magician will be out in April.
  • Speaking of April, Queen of Swords Press (me) will be releasing The Voyages of Cinrak the Dapper by A.J. Fitzwater and it's getting some lovely early reviews, including this one in Publishers Weekly. Preorder is up for the ebook edition, print is gradually making its way out into the world (Amazon, B&N)
  • Continuing my year of Sherlockiana, my story, “The Adventure of the Missing Fiancé,” is now forthcoming in 2021 in The Book of Extraordinary Sherlock Holmes Stories” edited by Maxim Jakubowski from Mango Books. It's a Sherlock Holmes and Mrs. Hudson mystery that follows up where "The Adventure of the Copper Beeches" leaves off. Super excited about this one!
  • More Sherlockiana! “The Rani’s Dream,” is forthcoming this year in Sherlock Holmes and the Occult Detectives edited by John Linwood Grant from Belanger Books. The Kickstarter goes live on 2/24!
  • I just recorded an interview with author Heather Jones for her LHMPodcast today. Link to that posted when it's available; in the meantime, check out the other great episodes and interviews.
On tap for this week: I won tickets to the Emma premiere tomorrow night from Rain Taxi and I'm going back to the Bell Museum with friends on Friday night to see "Silent Sky," a play about Henrietta Swan Leavitt, a  female astronomer at Harvard in the early 1900s. If the weather holds, there'll be an observatory night after the play. Really looking forward to this!
