There's an app called ljArchive that worked well for me. It downloads both posts and comments.

What's going on with LJ that you and Erastes are archiving your entries? Did I miss something?

Well, LJ now belongs to a company in Russia that still has an office in San Francisco. They did a sizeable number of layoffs last week, something like 25% to 30% of their staff, depending on what you read. We're all archiving in case it implodes essentially. :-(
There's a couple of utility programs (see above) or there's LJ exporter tool (search 'archiving' under FAQ). Not fun in any case.
