Trying to decide

if I like "Legend of the Seeker" (http://www.legendoftheseeker.com/) or not. The writing is ghastly and the acting of dubious merit (though that might be the burden of speaking the words - I know I'd have trouble keeping a straight face). But it is Tapert and Raimi and there are little touches of the good old days here and there. The Confessor (Quest Boy's female companion) fights, albeit in strange slow motion sequences, but is at least competent. We've also noticed that both she and he made constant noises when they fight. These were dubbed "girl noises" by some of our friends early on in our tv watching career because only female characters made them during their fights or any physical effort really; guess we'll need a new nickname for them now. At any rate, the plots are a tad derivative - we just watched the village women re-stage "I am Spartacus" to hide the Seeker's mother - but there is something there. Jay Lag'aia apparently turns up at some point, so that's always fun. Haven't read the Goodkind novels so no idea how close this is to those and whether or not that's a good thing.

In more highbrow commentary, we (and sundry other fen and local writers) went to go hear Samuel Delany at the Walker yesterday. He did a series of terrific readings from his latest (nongenre) novel and his autobiography. He does marvelous things with imagery. :-) And it turns out some of his work is back in print, including a spiffy short fiction collection that includes "Aye, and Gomorrah," a personal fav. He obligingly signed it for me as I reintroduced myself and we had a nice short chat. Well worth going to, though I'm sorry I missed the rally downtown. I suspect that, alas, there will be other opportunities.

Got actual writing done today and plan to send out yesterday's rejected short story to BLE tomorrow night. Yay, sense of writerly accomplishment.

I'm more excited by HBO optioning A Song of Ice and Fire, but also more trepidatious. I don't *care* if they mess up Legend of the Seeker, and I'm quite prepared to see the inevitable divergence from the text as an artistic improvement. In the case of GRR Martin, maybe not so much.

I must admit that I've never gotten around to that series either; I tend to be wary of any series that runs above 3 books since so few writers can sustain it. But I shall hope that for the fans' sake, I and F does not get butchered like the recent PBS Jane Austen series or the whitewashed version of Earthsea. Cue incoherent raving...
