We (my beloved and our pals) took a much needed short road trip yesterday - down to scenic Red Wing for lunch and some book shopping at Best of Times Books (http://www.bestoftimesbookstore.com/NASApp/store/IndexJsp). BoTB is an excellent medium sized general bookstore with a good selection. I don't think it was open when I had my writing residency at The Anderson Center back in 1999; if it was, I'm sorry I missed it when I was staying down there.

Then we went off downriver to Wabasha to check out the National Eagle Center (http://www.nationaleaglecenter.org). The Eagle Center does educational programs with injured eagles, hosts a small museum and an excellent observatory deck. We saw lots of eagles flying around and fishing which was an impressive added bonus. Highly recommended!

After that, we headed down to Kellogg to LARK Toys (http://www.larktoys.com/), now the oldest independent toystore in the U.S. They have a gorgeous handcarved (by local woodworkers) carousel, mini golf, a small toy museum and an amazing collection of things I haven't seen anywhere else, some of which they make onsite. We came back with a Joey Ramone action figure, a Zora Neal Hurston finger puppet, and 2 spiffy little women with swords from PAPO for my ever expanding Babes with Blades collection. And, of course, munchies, which they have in abundance. Pomegranate Jelly Bellys! I'm a happy woman!

Spent today actually writing - got an almost final draft ready to submit to [profile] sacchig's latest and got a good start on a story that someone asked for months ago. Next up, finishing up my class proposal for The Loft. I did manage to turn in my registration for the Donald Maas "Writing the Breakout Novel" workshop scheduled for late September. Now I just have to decide which of the 5 novels in prog I want to bring - not to mention work on between now and then.

It all sounds great! Was Zora Neale Hurston the Unemployed Philosopher's Club version?

Yep. She's up on my file cabinet next to Dorothy Parker, Emma Goldman, Harriet Tubman, Frida Kahlo and Jane Austen. :-D

Oooo sold!

Okay I see a road trip in our near future here. Must have the finger puppet. And the eagle viewing! And a new bookstore.

Although we either have to wait for the new puppy to grow up more or haul along all three dogs. LOL. Might have to wait until autumn . . .

I think you'd definitely enjoy the trip, possibly more dogless. :-) It's about 2 hours, roughly depending on traffic. And the antique stores in Redwing are to die for. :-)
We're hoping to go north in the fall - I love Grand Marais and the Angry Trout.
