In 'not really related at all news,' there is a initiative called GLBA (Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act) about Non-Disclosure of Personal Information, and sometimes people in meetings will call it GLBT instead (which I find amusing).
I dragged mecooper to Gaylaxicon 2006 and we had the same issue: not enough women! The high points for me were a discussion of Blood Ties (with andpuff on the panel) and a reading by Candas Jane Dorsey. At the latter, there was some discussion of WisCon, and several people insisted that I must go. So we did!
People at Wiscon were several magnitudes friendlier and more welcoming than anyone at Gaylaxicon. Maybe it's because we're middle-aged dykes who don't usually stand out in a crowd, but I didn't feel like I belonged at Gaylaxicon.
WisCon is a pretty unique experience that most cons don't match. Diversicon and Think Galactic are among the ones that try but both are much smaller. There were things I liked about Gaylaxicon (and I'm a guest for this year in D.C. so I can't complain too much :-) and I had some good discussions with folks. But it was more estrogen-lite in a way that even the normal cons I go to aren't. I gather the gender divide has been an ongoing problem with it. But the organizers for this year in D.C. are big WisCon folks so I think they'll try doing a bit more outreach. If you've got a urge to check it out again, I suspect this one will be better.
