A Celebration of Irene Adler

Seeing as I'm on a Holmes/Watson/Moriarity kick, I thought I'd celebrate my favorite character from the stories. Note that the Moffat version of her as not very smart dominatrix/assassin/something or other from Sherlock is missing; that is because we hates that version, Precious. Hates it with a hatred that burns since we feels that it is both clumsy and sexist. In the one and only canon story in which she appears "A Scandal in Bohemia"), Irene is talented and smart enough to see through Holmes' disguise and outwit him. She is awesome and Holmes admires her accordingly, which is a point in his favor. My favorite print depiction of her is in Carole Nelson Douglas' Irene Adler series which pits her and her own Watson against a range of villains that includes Jack the Ripper and is a really fun read.
A representative early cover (they look a lot more romancy now and there are romantic subplots but they're basically mysteries):

Irene Adler in Elementary, facing off against Joan Watson. The writers made the decision to make Adler and Moriarity, Holmes' arch enemy, the same person, and it works surprisingly well largely because Natalie Dormer sells it.

Irene Adler and Sherlock Holmes in the first Sherlock Holmes (2009) in the Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law series. I like her con artist/thief character in the first movie, but loath what happens in movie #2, which was otherwise great fun.

I haven't seen this episode of the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes, but it looks like a thing I should track down.
