Weekend catchup
Apr. 29th, 2012 03:56 pmSpent Friday night establishing that it is THE night to go to the Science Museum. No crowds, no lines, no shrieking kids. We took in the "Real Pirates" show. It is well done, including a large scale models, artifacts from the pirate (former slave ship) Whydah and a fair number of interesting exhibits. I found the connections between piracy and slavery in the Caribbean pretty fascinating and learned some new things.
Where it falls short is on women pirates. Bonny and Read get a cursory mention. Grace O'Malley, Jacquotte Delahaye, Anne Dieu-le-Vent, Rachel Wall and so on aren't included at all, which is annoying. And since, as with most of the Science Museum shows, it's geared toward children, we are once again telling little girls that historically, women are pretty invisible. :-(
Saturday night, we took in Theater Unbound's all-women production of Julius Caesar. This is on for another week and is definitely worth catching. We liked most of the performances and thought it made for an interesting spin on the Shakespearean tradition of all-male casts.
Tonight, I'm off to Hardcover Theater's Steampunk Delusions with a different group of friends. Looking forward to this one as well.
Otherwise, the weekend's been all about nursing my back (quite sore, for some reason), hanging out with the cats, who are now mostly reconciled, and pulling together a guest blog, which I'm hoping is what my hosts are looking for. I've got a couple of other potential blog appearances and a new podcast floating around, plus various cons. It's going to be an interesting year.
