My week in media
Mar. 25th, 2012 03:13 pmWent to see The Hunger Games last night with friends and found it pretty enjoyable. I was glad I read the book first, though, as much of it would have been a bit hard to follow otherwise. Good performances, good sets and I like the additional perspectives that showed what was going on in the planning behind the games. It does pass the Bechdel test, though not as well as the book does. We saw it in a theater packed with teenagers who were completely riveted, which was fun. :-)
Caught the first episode of Missing the other night. While I have doubts about how long the premise (retired CIA agent will stop at nothing to rescue her son from kidnappers who clearly have a bigger agenda) will hold up, watching Ashley Judd crash a Vespa through a plate glass window and take her pursuers on a wild chase through Rome was pretty cool. It's got potential (warning: pretty violent, high body count) and it's nice to see a middle-aged woman kicking some serious butt on TV again. Been too long.
Curious about Scandal, but missed it due to work. Anyone else seen this one?
I'm following Once Upon a Time off and on. I like the ensemble cast and the wicked queen. The grimer episodes are easily the best written but Emma is too bland. They need to kick up her character a few notches to make this show sparkle. And, of course, it's relentlessly straight, which is tiresome.
I'm looking forward to Mirror, Mirror, because I do like a decent fairytale retelling. Which it will hopefully turn out to be. Snow White and the Huntsman looks prettier and more surreal so looking forward to the comparison on that. Should be some interesting move-going in the next few months.
