Why WisCon rocks...
May. 20th, 2007 07:00 pmHere's one of the cool women in comics organizations I just learned about because it was mentioned in the panel decription for a panel that I'm on -

And long as I'm on the subject of comics, I made the mistake of picking up Marvel's 'Women of Marvel' collection a month or so back. Ostensibly it's a collection of first issues featuring butt-kicking women. In actuality, this little gem combines some of the most wooden writing I've ever read, which is saying something. A sample scene from 'Shanna the She-Devil' - "Little woman threaten Zarg!? Makes Zarg laugh!" Indeed. Makes reader cringe but hey, there's more.
Another little gem - Wasp holds a party to recruit more women to the Avengers. Giant robot attacks for no apparent reason. Most of the (female) superhero guests wander off, apparently because it's all so stressful. Or because they're getting their nails done. It's hard to tell since there is no plot. Personal fav: Rogue absorbs Ms. Marvel's powers and personality, then subsequently rescues Ms. Marvel's boyfriend. Much hysterical weeping and falling down ensues, then he backhands her and walks away while she weeps on the beach in a veritable orgy of self-loathing. In a word: Ick.
And don't get me started on the artwork. Lordy, but this is a collection without redeeming merit. No wonder most of my friends read manga instead. Emphatically not recommended.

Marvel Universe
Date: 2007-05-21 12:38 am (UTC)DC has more queers, more women, and it STILL has a long way to go. Gail Simone will soon be writing Wonder Woman, which *hopefully* will redeem the character; WW has been written like a total DOPE for the last year. Grrrrrrr. BUT, check out the new Blue Beetle, that's a GREAT comic right now:

I got the first 4 Dark Tower (as in based on King's series) comics for my birthday, and while I haven't really
read them yet, the artwork is VERY good.
Re: Marvel Universe

Batman and Superman's kids end up in a town full of women where touching a woman means death. Or something. It's all an alien plot of course.
From the Silver Age Supergirl suepr cleans the Fortress of Solitude. In this story line she's tryign to find Superman a wife because OMG you can not be fulfilled with out a spouse. Hence the disturbing cousins panel.
