EAA Conference Recap (Part 1)
Sep. 11th, 2011 08:05 pmJust back from the inaugural Erotic Author's Association "Sex in Sin City" conference in Vegas.
I flew in on Thursday night and got to meet up with my friend, writer and reviewer Megan Cooper. She was in town on vacation and we had an evening of overlap before she headed back to Ottawa. Lots of good conversation and tasty salad made for a nice kickoff to the weekend.
Saturday morning dawned bright and early and once caffeinated, I headed down to conference central. The first panel I made it to was the Publisher's Panel with M. Christian, Hazel Cushion, Brenda Knight, Lori Perkins and Cecilia Tan. Radclyffe unfortunately had to skip the con (she was scheduled for this panel as well). This panel focussed on what erotic publishers were currently doing, what they were looking for and changes in the publishing industry. Good discussion and worthwhile panel, plus I got to meet M. Christian, which was lovely. Next up, I hit the Erotic Romance panel, which was a bit less focussed but provided an overview of some of what's going in erotic romance - BDSM Romance is big with Renaissance, sweet romances are always popular with Torquere.
From there, I did a reading with Jolie DuPre, Greydancer and D.L. King. This was fun but sparsely attended as we'd been moved once and there wasn't much to tell anyone where the readings were. I was a bit disapponted by this, but it's certainly something they be easily fixed for any future conventions.
Post-reading I was off to lunch with writer Dayle Dermitis and her husband, which was delightful. When we got back, I took in part of M. Christian's How to Write and Sell Erotica. This was lively and entertaining - and you can check out the gist of the content in M. Christian's book of the same name, published by Renaissance earlier this year (I'm a contributor, for full disclosure).
Then I was off to the Writing Queer panel which included Laura Antoniou, Marshall Thornton, Cecilia Tan and me. We had a free-ranging discussion on various aspects of queer erotica and romance. I don't remember any original and staggering point coming out of it but I do gather it was entertaining and informative. Then I met up with D. L. King and we went on a long wacky expedition to get party supplies for the Circlet Press party. 2 casino/hotels, some cab rides, a Walgreen's and lively conversation later and we were back at the Flamingo. After a fast dinner, Cecilia Tan and I were off to the Erotic Heritage Museum for the reading.
The Museum includes a priapic temple replica, which was where we did the reading. I have always dreamed of reading my work while surrounded by giant plaster penises so we can cross that one off the list.:-) The Museum is worth a gander if you're in the area though, and the authors participating in the reading included Debra Hyde, Cecilia Tan, Jean Roberta, Kate Dominic, Laura Antoniou, D.L. King, Andrea Dale, Jolie DuPre, and a host of other folks, including me. It made for an entertaining couple of hours and was taped, I think. I'll post a link when/if one turns up.
Fall down and go boom now. I'll covet Saturdah tomorrow.
