In which we arrive home, briefly
May. 31st, 2010 08:31 pmSeeing as I'm off again in a couple of days leaving Jana to wrangle kitties and such. Urk.
Saturday night, I donned The Outfit and wandered the parties. "Donning" involved Jana lacing me up accompanied by me clutching thin air and yelling, "Pull tighter! I will have a 18 inch waist!" to the great amusement of our roommate, author S.N. Arly, who then got to do my hair. Several times, since apparently the complex mechanism behind the metal hair fork does not come naturally to me. But it was real purty when she got it all yanked into place. I got to sweep regally down the hallway, startling friends and acquaintances alike (at one point, I also announced that I was costumed as "a post-colonial narrative," which elicited giggles. This is the sort of joke that really only flies at WisCon :-). I got my photo taken, a number of comments ranging from the tasteful to the less so and had a fine time until my feet gave out. I headed back to the room where Jana unlaced me. Rebecca and Terry then appeared at the door, desirous of seeing The Outfit (they had just finished volunteering at the Tiptree Auction, 11:30ish). So back I went into the corset. This time around, we used some tips provided by our pal Ben and I figured out how to get out of it on my own, which will prove handy next weekend. Scoundrelle's work was much admired as was the rest of it so I felt I'd also done my bit to promote small women-owned businesses.
I should also mention that the parties were preceded by a splendid 50th b-day celebration for Jana at a nice Turkish restaurant on State Street. She said that she had an excellent day all around :-)
Sunday was brunch at the Orpheum, followed by a brisk spending spree in the Dealer's Room, then meeting with JoSelle Vanderhooft to catch up and work on our anthology, Hellebore and Rue (still open for queries and subs for another couple of weeks). It made for a pleasant and productive couple of hours. Then it was back to con to give librarian superhero Lynne Thomas the next installment of my papers for NIU, then race off to the "Back to the Small Press" panel. This was sparsely attended but apparently interesting enough that several people approached me (and presumably other panelists, but I was in motion to my next programming item by then) afterward with questions about Lethe Press and publishing in general. Next up was the Broad Universe reading, where a large number of us read brief excerpts of thrilling and interesting works. It has been suggested in certain quarters that I should perhaps finish Silver Moon so there's even more to read from. I promise progress is being made
I then went off to dinner with the Usual Suspects at the Hotel bar. I found myself zoning out to the Syfy (snort!) channel which gives one an idea of how tired I was. There was Tiptree Dessert after that, accompanied by interesting in line discussion. Dessert was terrific and the company was excellent. GOH Dr. Nnedi Okorafor gave a lovely speech, there were other exciting speeches, comments and thanks and...Jana had a massive allergy attack so we left somewhere in the middle of it. There was another tour through the parties, followed by bed. Breakfast this morning with cathschaffstump was lovely. Old friends from the distant past stopped by to say hi and we did Minnesota goodbyes for a bit in the lobby with the ever-charming badger2305 and sparkymonster, among others. The trip back was splendid as well, including as it did a brief stop for refreshment at Norske Nook in Osseo.
Onward and upward. 2 days of work, followed by Dallas on Thursday. Whee!
