Back from NYC
Aug. 19th, 2007 04:45 pmAs of yesterday. The reading went quite well, I think. I got to meet some of the contributors to "Juicy Mangoes," an anthology of Latina erotica. The always charming and amiable
sacchig not only showed up to cheer me on but gave me a fabulous gift in the bargain - a Jane Austen tarot deck! :-D In addition, the lovely and talented Ama Patterson, who I met at Diversicon a few weeks back, came in from Long Island for the occasion. And my mom valiantly sat through several readings, including mine, and professed to enjoy one or two of them (even mine - apparently I'm funny :-) despite the noise level in the bar. My beloved also joined my personal cheering section so I ended the evening feeling like I had excellent taste in friends and relatives.
The bar was quite packed, the other writers fun to listen to and I gave away lots of cards and sold or gave away a few books. Then got Bluestockings Bookstore around the corner to take the rest on consignment so it was reasonably successful on that score as well.
The rest of the trip was a somewhat mixed bag. Our first hotel was fairly terrifying so we only lasted there one night (the feeling that the sheets were crawling with things we couldn't see and the lack of locks on the door having a certain influence on our decision to decamp). The second hotel was much better but more expensive than I had budgeted for. And I got the long awaited summer cold that I'd been successfully dodging for months.
But we did get to go see Judy Chicago's "The Dinner Party" and the Global Feminism exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum's Sackler Center for Feminist Art. The DP is one hell of an impressive piece of work - I was floored by the amount of work in the place settings alone. Well worth seeing, as were the surrounding shows.
On the family front, my mom has also decided that she's ready to move out here into assisted living sometime in the near future so we're planning and budgeting for that now. It'll be a big change for all of us so hopefully we can make it work with a minimum of pain.
On the home front, we're finally painting the kitchen! I may get a stove again soon! Huzzah! (We've been 'remodeling' for 2 years now so we only have a camp stove in the kitchen).
