Weekend wrap-up and discoveries
May. 8th, 2011 01:11 pmIt's been a full but not super productive weekend. Friday night was spent doing book publicity for Hellebore and getting caught up on some things. Saturday was a trip into semi-rural Minnesota for the St. Croix Valley Pottery Tour which wraps up today. This is a fun event which features tours of potter's studios and pottery sales at various locations. It's been a few years since we got to go on one - this time around netted us a potter who'll making us some new plates and bowls to replace the current eating ware which is in various states of disrepair and mismatching-ness.
Last night we went for dinner at Erte, where we ran into a bunch of my current coworkers (this was a good thing as they are pleasant and entertaining :-), then off to The Ritz to see Katha Dance Theater's production of several works by Rabindranath Tagore. Our friend Sarika is dancing the lead and does a phenomenal job. The production is interesting, though we found it morally ambiguous (should you be resigned to your fate? Are all attempts to change bad?). Worth seeing though. This morning, we took a longish stroll down to our new neighborhood eatery, The Modern Times on Chicago and 32nd for an excellent breakfast (think a cross between the Seward Cafe and some place like the Good Egg, if you're local).
Other odds and ends:
SF Mistressworks - excellent list of sf by women. I've read a number of these but certainly not all. *Makes note to read more.
Had a morning tangle with the EPIC eBook Awards people. Apparently the award nominations have to be screened for content lest the judges be traumatized. Top of the list? Not things like rape or incest or even complete inability to put sentences together, but GLBT content. Ooh, the horror. I've told them I won't aid and abet homophobia and am now looking at how to resign my membership.
Apart from that, the Feminist SF and Russ Twitter chat is going on now. #FeministSF if you want to join in.
