Odds and ends
Feb. 21st, 2011 10:30 amI actually have today off, which is fortuitous seeing as I have a killer cold (not as bad as Jana's, but fairly horrendous in its own right) and I slipped on the ice while taking out the trash yesterday, making my lower back deeply unhappy. I'm making a lot of progress on edits, seeing as I can't move too much right now anyway and we got 13 inches of snow yesterday. It looks like I'll have all the hard copy edits for Silver Moon done today, barring unforeseen circumstances. I may also have some good day job news coming - I'm awaiting news on that front.
Other than that, we've been getting caught up on movies. So far this weekend, it's been "The Kids Are All Right" which neither of us liked. We thought the characters were unsympathetic and frequently unbelievable (Moore more so than Benning), all of which we could have lived with if it was an overall better movie. General review of "Blah. Who cares?" from our household. "High Fidelity," again seemed pretty overrated. I was hoping it would be funnier than it was. "Alice in Wonderland" (the new one) - this one we both liked, possibly because we were feverish when we watched it. Interesting take, pretty to look at, definite moments.
Worthwhile things: A Room of One's Own Bookstore in Madison, WI is having trouble making ends meet. They're asking supporters to commit to buying 5 more books a year from the store so they can stay open. Attendees at WisCon, please take note. AROO has been pretty con-supportive over the years. Here's the pledge page - http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/event.php?eid=135335813200228. And here's the bookstore's page: http://www.roomofonesown.com/
Speaking of Wisconsin, you can support the 14 Democrats who are protesting the gutting of public employee unions in the state out at ActBlue.
And in one more Wisconsin-related post, con_or_bust, the fundraiser for sending more fans of color to WisCon is off and running today. Always lots of great stuff to be found at this one.
