It's been a lovely 4 days off. I went to dinner and conversation at Grumpy's with Jana and [info]mr_bad_example on Wednesday night, then took a much needed day off on Thursday. We went to The Russian Museum for a show of lacquer-work (which I adore) and Romanov china, which was interesting. I love many things about TMORA, but one of those is that it's one of the few places I ever stumble across people spontaneously discussing Gogol's Dead Souls. This novel, incidentally, is excellent satire and well worth reading, if you haven't already.

The rest of the day was spent puttering and working on a steampunk story that someone has expressed interest in. Friday was spent doing breakfast out and running errands, followed by Hellebore and Rue proofing and a pleasant
intimate gathering at author C.M. Harris and her partner, Cheryl's place for New Year's Eve. We went home a bit before midnight to pumpkin and miss the height of the drunk driving on icy streets "fun" that would come later. New Year's Day we holed up to work on projects. It looks like I'll be pulling together a new collection of short fiction of release later on this year. This one will be queer, primarily lesbian, fantasy and historicals, based on what came together when I started looking at and organizing the available oeuvre last night. More bulletins on that as we get the details ironed out, but I'm already pretty excited about it.

Today, it was brunch in St. Anthony Park, followed by a trip to Micawber's Books. They were in the midst of inventory and we had an entertaining time climbing over people. We also found some interesting books: an herbal with woodcuts and a mystery/literary novel for Jana, an Emily Dickinson collection for me, as well as Eileen Myle's new autobiographical novel and a book of candid snapshots of Virginia Woolf and social circle's life in Bloomsbury.
I was bemused to note that while Penguin's Great Idea Series includes no more than 5 women authors, grand total, and even fewer writers of color, it does include "Confessions of an English Opium Eater." I am left to wonder which aspects of the latter constitute a "great idea." Yay, laudanum? Thoroughly unimpressed, which is a pity because they're nicely designed little books.

So now we are home and back to work. I'm finishing up proofing Hellebore and embarking on the next round of edits on Silver Moon (addressing beta reader comments before it goes out on agent quest). Then it's back to the day job again this week. So very much lovely sleep this week; I'll miss it.
