Mid-week in the Minneapple

mr_bad_example and I were foiled in our efforts to go see Irma Vep (Murder! Mayhem! Monsters! And Melodrama!) at The Jungle last night as it was sold out, but we did score 2 of the last tix for next Tuesday. Huzzah! :-) We did manage to make due with dinner and dessert though, so the evening wasn't a total loss. Speaking of mr_bad_example, he also recommended "The Secret of Kells," which I sent Jana off to with one of her bookbinding pals. They enjoyed it and said it was well worth seeing so I guess I'll get my chance when it's out on video.
The rest of this week is taken up with day job (not surprisingly), getting prepped for teaching this weekend (Inflagranti Delicto: Writing Good Sex Scenes at the Loft - still open for registration, BTW) and working on anthology edits. Silver Moon is now comfortably over the 60k word mark and progressing apace, though slowly. And I have just committed to going to Women's Week in Provincetown in October to read with the fabulous Sacchi Green and others. Very psyched as I've heard good things about this event and Sacchi is one of my favorite people. It also gives me something to think about at the dreaded day job besides my enormous workload and sundry administrativa so all to the good.
Various links and such:
Happy belated b-day (from yesterday) to Frida Kahlo!
Some authors (I'm not sure how widespread this is, but the news isn't good) are having problems getting paid and so forth by Nightshade Books. Amongst them are Liz Williams and Brendan Halpin, both of whom are doing fundraisers to pay their bills. If you're an Inspector Chen fan, there's a new serial story on offer. Sad news though; Nightshade has done some interesting books.
Mystery Writers of America announces the guidelines and application for the Helen McCloy scholarship for aspiring mystery writers to attend classes, workshops, etc.
And finally, the ABA 2010 Bookbuying Survey. Some interesting reading here about demographics, shopping at indie bookstores, using e-readers and other good stuff. If you write and/or publish, this is one to check out.
