Bitten by Books really likes Night's Kiss - am very pleased. :-D

In other news, I've been asked to write a short piece on my favorite lesbian protagonists (fictional, as in the written kind) for webzine Kissed by Venus so I'm gathering my thoughts and a not inconsiderable amount of books. So far, the list is (I won't be using any author more than once and am not limiting by genre):
  • Trouble, from Trouble and Her Friends by Melissa Scott. Makes my little cybergeeky heart go pitterpat.
  • Ash, from Dancing Jack by Laurie Marks. I know, I know, everyone loves the Logic books, but I really love this quirky early fantasy of hers.
  • Catriona MacEochan, from The Fires of Bride by Ellen Galford. One of those authors who I desperately wish was still writing/being published.
  • Lore, from Slow River by Nicola Griffith.
  • The unnamed narrator, from After Delores by Sarah Schulman. The ultimate East Village in the late 80s novel, with a protag that suits the neighborhood.
  • Ellen, from Temporary Agency by Rachel Pollack. Which may be more about loving TA but I wanted to include something by her.
At which point, I realize I'm kicking it Old School and most of my favorites are long out of print, not that this is any reason not to turn readers onto their earlier work. I'll be frank and will say that the lesbian characters in a lot of more recent work simply haven't stuck with me, but maybe I'm not reading the right stuff. Who would you recommend and why?

Trouble! Wow, I hadn't thought about Trouble in years.

I'd add maybe the unnamed second person in Rebecca Brown's "The Terrible Girls" but that's really old school too. Clearly I need to expand my reading habits again.

Oh, I'm totally with you on Dancing Jack. Lovely book. But I think every Marks book I've read has had amazing, memorable characters, so I'd have a hard time picking one.

I must admit, I found "Fire Logic" good but angsty Haven't tackled the others in the series yet, but I do think she's an excellent writer.
