So my beloved, book artist/conservator/book designer/Mistress of a 1000 Skills Jana Pullman is having a crappy, crappy couple of weeks. She got turned down for a couple of grants that would have made life much, much easier for her this year, she got passed over for an award she deserved to win and to top it off, I talked her into doing "A Foot in the Door" down at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. We just went down there to discover that not only did they stage it like a rummage sale, they displayed (as in parked on a table behind bunches of other stuff) her lovely miniature leather-bound books in their original box. Still closed, so you can't actually see the books.
The idea of the exhibit (let everyone who wants to come in and show their stuff, provided it's a certain size) is a decent one and the rooms were packed with viewers, but it's really hard on the artistic ego if you've produced something spectacular and no one can really see it. There are quite a few nice pieces in the show, incidentally, so I'd say it's worth having a look, probably after you're checked out the website so you know what you're looking at.
Which leads me back to Jana and her recent work. Here's the link to A Foot in the Door. You can search on Pullman and see the little books outside the box, as well as perusing the other artists in the show (elisem has a piece in it as well so be sure and search on her too). And you can "favorite" any of the artwork you are inspired to. There's a better shot of the same books at the 100th Anniversary Guild of Bookworkers Show.
She's also in a group book art at St. Paul Academy's Henry Drake Gallery through March 12, 2010.
She has a blog at AbouttheBinding where she talks about her repair work and her design binding.
Two print-making students made a charmingly cheesy YouTube about her last year when she was doing a presentation at the South Dakota Mid-America Print Council conference. The Jana Pullman Story.
She's offering some upcoming classes at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts.
Here's her completely gorgeous book for The Guild of Bookworker's show "Marking Time" (also including many other fabulous books - this was one of the better shows she's been in).
And the 2008 Winter Book, Winter Ink, which featured acclaimed local poet Bryan Thao Worra's work as well as Jana's gorgeous red and green silk binding and the remarkable work of a number of other artists including yuusui.
Please enjoy as leisure permits and if the spirit moves, say something nice about the work.
