Several of them by way of haddayr:
The disability cliche bingo card - here. This is a useful discussion-promoting tool which I am loving.
And another link, this one to an excellent essay on why using the word "Retard" is as fucked-up as most of us know it to be, even when we don't acknowledge that fact and use it ourselves or don't object when others use it around us. And no, Stephen Colbert and Rush Limbaugh, it's not cool when you use it either.

Why we need real healthcare - the fluffybunnyfund reports that they have raised the minimum to cover upfront costs for hominysnark's medical procedure, which is good. What is not so good is that she's going be $30,000 in the hole when all is said and done. Trust me when I say this is a gigantic amount for a self-employed artist. Harass your Congress people (and check out F-Bod Studios, the artist in question's business site for some hilarious t-shirts and other interesting things. One of my favs for the amusement value - "Writer's Block - The Maltese Yorkie." Indeed!).

Finally, awesome photoshot by way of steamfashion. I LOVE this!

Interesting essay. I have a bit of difficulty seeing certain
words as the problem. The problem is the way people with mental
illness are treated.

To me it is far less important what label gets used or banned
or whatever. Changing the label doesn't fix the problem.

I will do my best not to say: "I don't dance, because
I dance like a retard," anymore.

From now on, I'm just "Dance Challenged"

Gotta ask this question back - so you write fiction and music, but words have no power? Dude.
It's about how our perceptions are shaped.

I'm not saying words don't have power.
I'm saying the power of words is VERY subjective.

And I'm saying that derogatory terms are a symptom of the disease -- not the disease.
You don't cure a disease by curing the symptoms.

I think the cure is education, awareness, funding, research,...

I don't promote the use of any derogatory terms, but I think that right now
we should be FAR more worried about the funding cuts and many more of
these people being on the streets with no safety net, than what words are
being used.

I understand that some people think changing the words changes the perceptions
and helps fix the problem. I just don't think that is going to be a sufficient way
of solving this problem.

Yes, of course. But it helps down on the day to day level to work on the perceptions as well.

Then we can agree to agree :)

Godspeed on the writing! (unless you're agnostic)
