Brave, new world...

of hoping day job weirdness is calming down a bit, among other things. The last few weeks have been like participating in sheepdog trials. I'm the collie and have only one sheep but the sheep is as smart as I am and makes sporadic escape attempts. Meanwhile management keeps changing the course around, moving the pens in and out and occasionally tying my sheep's legs together then asking me why he hasn't made more progress. It's been interesing in a grueling "I'm not sleeping very well and have an eyelid tic from stress and exhaustion" kind of a way. At least he's a nice sheep. :->
On a more fun note, I got to go hear the fabulous and wonderful polka band Brave Combo at the Cedar on Wednesday with my beloved and the charming
gismonda. I've seen this band every year for the last 20 years or so, occasionally more than once, and I've never seen them put on a bad show. Did as much dancing around as the post car accident knee (still not really healed from last October's accident) will permit. And
gismonda valiantly broke her "No Chicken Dance" policy just for me. :-)))
Thursday, I went to go hear local mystery writers Ellen Hart and Lori Lake read from their latest at Amazon. I've talked to Lori online a bit about coming in and talking to her queer lit class at The Loft in a month or two but also wanted to meet her personally. She's got an interesting new book out called "Snow Moon Rising" about the Romani during WWII and its aftermath. It's a departure from her mysteries - I just started "Have Gun, We'll Travel" - which seem to be more police procedure kind of novels. And she's very, very nice in the bargain. Check out her website at http://www.lorillake.com/.
Ellen Hart was good too, BTW. :-)
Last night was my company's holiday party, filled with the usual number of surreal moments that occur at such things. At least everyone was relatively sober and mostly fairly amiable. My manager clawed his way further up the foodchain which should prove interesting since I gather I'll go on reporting to him.
And being me, I couldn't end the year without committing to another deadline. I agreed to finish another story this week instead of working on my new menopausal werewolves tale that I started for a different anthology last week. Soon the call of the full moon and the occasional hot flash should prove too much and will pull me back in though. Speaking of which, everyone out there inclined to do so seen "Ginger Snaps"? We watched the second in the series last week and I just bought the first. Goth adolescent female werewolves filled with angst and sarcasm and terribly grim humor. Normally I can't stand horror but these are a huge exception. :-)
