Sunday assortment

Plugging away at Silver Moon, which is slow but in motion. I listened to an interview with Stephanie Meyer this morning in which she came across as articulate, if not particularly interesting. She went on at length about how she'd just cranked through Twilight in three months or so and how it was all so easy. I had a moment of pure (and very irritating) writerly envy. Jana says I'm just taking it more seriously and insisting on it trying to be good rather than just sellable. Some days, I'm not sure where that gets me. Feeling a bit slow and bleak right now.

In other news, Switzerland decided to scrap that whole pesky freedom of religion thing in favor of Fear of a Muslim Planet. I don't think banning minarets is going to do it, guys. Unless of course you think that signing on with the agenda of racist, xenophobes is a good thing. Here's hint: when Stormfront is supporting you, you're doing something very, very wrong. And I just love the poster in support of the ban, the ones that equates the oppression of women with the rise of militant Islam and the end of the Swiss state. After all, this is the same Switzerland where women didn't get the vote until 1971 and where nearly half of the female population can't get a job. But then, we're not doing that well on that score either.

This, on the other hand, brightened my morning somewhat - The Curious Sofa by Edward Gorey. Check out the movie poster - it is quite awesome.

I presume you saw that interview the same place I did on CBS Sunday morning. I skipped church to watch Tom Petty and saw her as well. I just wanted to puke. Honestly. Gag.

I was honestly expecting the Swiss story to lead me to a link to The Onion. It's true, Switzerland isn't exactly a bastion of forward thinking on human rights, their "neutrality" be damned. But, wow, I still thought you might be kidding. And I want to say something intelligent about it beyond this, but I have no words.

No, unfortunately. Just to make the whole staggering thing complete, there's apparently all of 4 mosques in the entire country, which I realize is small but I wouldn't call that being 'overrun' by any stretch. :-(

I just don't get the connection between architecture and civil rights. Some people apparently do: I saw a slippery slope argument somewhere saying "If we allow minarets, next thing you know they'll be forcing us to comply with Sharia law and be polygamous." Srsly. <head-desk>

Well, it makes for a not very nifty way to try and make a minority more invisible, which is wrong on many levels. Not unlike the French law which bans hijabs at schools and government buildings. But I'm guessing that if there was a new fad for French (presumably) Christian women wearing Hermes scarves that covered their hair, that would be okay. :-(
