Weekend update and Minneapolis news
Apr. 17th, 2011 12:10 pmIt has a been a jam-packed with socializing kind of weekend and that has been lovely and much needed. Friday, Matt and Rebecca were over for dinner (black bean couscous cakes with mango and salad) and movies (La Femme Musketeer - which we do not recommend - and Daria - which we do). Saturday we were off to the Seward Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) to re-up with our terrific farm from last year, Living the Dream Farm, which features duck eggs and goat-related products including soap and cheese. Then it was on to other errands, lunch at The Happy Gnome and off to Menomonie, WI. This last was to the home of Dr. Laura McCullough and novelist Kelly McCullough for the annual Propitiation of the Red Currant Jelly Party, about which more here. It was a fine and jolly time and a pleasant trip out and back.
Sunday morning was spent breakfasting with our pal Naomi (visiting from Iowa) at Grand Cafe and tonight will be the Johnny Clegg concert at the Cedar Cultural Center. I loved Clegg's work with Savuka and Juluka and used to play their songs on my radio show back in the 1980s so I'm really looking forward to this show. And there'll be Thai food with my friend Sheila beforehand so it's bound to be a terrific evening.
Before then, I'm finishing up the blurb for the print edition of Sacchi Green's new erotic collection from Lethe, A Ride to Remember and Other Erotic Tales. Sacchi is awesome and I highly recommend the new book, just saying. Then it's back to my collection - edits are coming along and the title story is moving forward, but taking more time than I would like. I'm hoping to really pick up steam this next week and get this ready to go to the publisher in the next couple of weeks.
As for the Minneapolis news, Naomi mentioned that there was a new breakfast and lunch place in Powderhorn, The Modern Times Cafe on Chicago Ave. and 31st in the old Modern building. It looks to be a Seward Cafe/Hard Times kind of place and we're looking forward to checking it out. Further down the block, the row of buildings across from the Chicago Ave. Fire Arts Center is being renovated and tenated for the first time in well over 20 years. We checked out the new Chicago Ave. Consignment shop which has some very nice household things in it. Next up, the Fox Egg Gallery and Photo Studio, a new coffee house (not open yet) and rumor has it that photographer Wing Young Huie is moving his studio down there. We're really excited about all of it and looking forward to checking it all out.
