Doing ALL the Online Things...
Aug. 10th, 2020 07:43 pmOr so it seems. I actually did get out and about a bit this weekend. Friday night was episode three of an interactive online murder mystery that Park Square Theater is hosting. Saturday morning was a trip to the Mill City Farmer's Market with my friend, Sheila. It was also the day that the chimney replacement guys planned to come. And both cats were unwell. Fortunately, given yesterday's downpour, the chimney guys postponed putting a big hole in our roof until later on this week. A chat with the vet has produced results such that Ma'at is back to her usually bouncy, cheerful self. Shu is not greatly improved, however, and may have to visit the vet soon.
Saturday night, our friend Matt came over for dinner and the watching of The Dead Lands. This is my new favorite discovery from CoNZealand - an entire series of snarky Maori horror! It is awesome! The basic premise is that a Maori warrior who's done a lot of bad things is killed but rejected by his ancestors in the afterlife until he redeems himself. This involves returning to the land of the living to help a young woman fight off armies of the living dead and restore their world. All the actors are Maori, as are the writers and sizeable chunk of the crew so it's very grounded in Maori culture and mythology and the pacing is a bit different than what you'd see in an similar American series. I heartily recommend watching it if comic horror is your thing.
On Sunday morning, I ran errands, then went to have a distanced meetup with my friend Marie. We visited Dancing Bear Chocolates (Minneapolis' own gay chocolatiers!) in North Minneapolis, then went across the street to sit in the Lyndale Elementary garden (which is quite lovely). Dancing Bear makes truffles, fresh lemon curd, chocolate-dipped fruit, gelato and all kinds of other yummies and the two guys who own it are charming. I highly recommend a visit! There is an order window that you can use if you'd rather not go inside. Anyway, haven't seen Marie in way too long so it was lovely hanging out.
After that, I stopped by my beloved Abi's Cafe, now once again open at Lake and Bloomington to pick up dinner before heading home to work and talk to friends on Discord. Abi's got hit hard during the riots, but the owner was able to protect it from the fires. She reopened in the back with a food truck a couple of weeks ago while the restaurant got fixed back up again, so we're trying to eat there pretty regularly. Lake Street is what you've seen burning on the news in you live elsewhere; there still miles of destruction, so anything we can get back is to be cherished. And Abi's makes killer Salvadoran pupusas and the owner is good people.
And tomorrow night, I start back up with my online movement and isolation classes with Cassandra Shore of Jawaahir Dance. Jawaahir is the local Middle Eastern dance troupe and their studio is located in the Hook & Ladder Theater, next door to what used to be the Third Precinct. Much of that area is still in ruins; there's some shenningans about when builders owners can get their former buildings demolished (many want to rebuild) and it's causing ridiculous delays. The Hook & Ladder held up pretty well against the fires and riots (it's an old fire house), but is getting clobbered by COVID so they're doing online concerts, etc. to stay afloat.
Other than that, I'm under the weather, Shu's under the weather, I have deadlines, Jana has book repair work and on and on. Queen of Swords Press is a virtual vendor at Southeast Colorado Pride this week and Alex Acks is the featured author at Madame Askew's Temporal Entourage book club and tea meeting on Sunday. We'll be chatting about Murder on the Titania and it promises to be delightful so please join us, if you can,
