At this point, I am less inclined to believe this sort of response if it includes anything along the lines of "I have been personally acquainted with [the person who is being accused of harassment] for many years." The problem is that we (as a species, I mean, not just fandom here) tend to assume that accusations against our friends are false or trivial.
It's very hard to deal with the likelihood that character witnesses are worthless except maybe in specific areas: not "Sasha is a good person" but "Sasha always gets her work done on time" or "Sasha repaid the money that I lent them for dinner." Hard to deal with because I have no idea of what to put in its place, and even a bad heuristic is more appealing than no heuristic at all.
