With the passing of Mr. Nelson Mandela this week, I got to thinking about heroes. I think viewing someone as a hero is a deeply complicated thing because we learn to think of our heroes as flawless. I prefer to think of mine as people doing work that inspires me, and who I would like to emulate. Here are some links about a few of my personal heroes. Who are some of yours?

Dolores Huerta - one of the founders of the United Farm Worker's Union and a tireless advocate for the rights of the poor, immigrants, women and others. An amazing speaker and activist.

Joanna Russ - utterly brilliant science fiction and fantasy writer as well as a feminist scholar. If you haven't read her yet, what are you waiting for?

Archbishop Desmond Tutu - the only religious leader on my list and the closest thing to a true saint I think I've ever seen.

Emma Goldman - a firebrand organizer and thought-provoking writer

June Jordan - brilliant poet, writer and activist who also identified as bisexual.
