Favorite local small businesses plug
Nov. 26th, 2013 09:56 amSeeing as how most of us will do some shopping this week (thought hopefully not from large retailers from unfortunates paid next to nothing and forced to work on a holiday), I wanted to put in a plug for some of the localish small businesses that I like. Send me your favorites and I'll add them.
Starry Night Beadworks - beautiful steampunk-influenced jewelry. Love their work - shiny and solidly made.
St. Croix Chocolate Co.- tasty, lovely chocolates
Bingley's Teas - full disclosure - a friend's business. But the teas are really yummy and her packaging makes it a spiffy gift item
Esse Resusable Bags - just discovered their reusable bag tote with 6 reusable grocery, etc. bags in it and love it.
Rain Taxi Reviews - book reviews, local poetry readings, the Twin Cities Book Festival. In short a subscription is a gift that keeps on giving.
Uncle Hugo's Science Fiction and Uncle Edgar's Mystery Bookstores - best selection new and used of SF/F/H and mysteries in town
Woody's Pet Food Deli - mostly organic, grain-free, additive-free ground meat for your pet. Great food, especially if you have a pet with food allergies. Not wildly expensive, plus they do pet adoptions, etc. I think they have gift certificates, just saying.
Beez Kneez - bicycle-delivered honey from urban bee hives. Yumm...
Stretching the "local" across the river - The Green Glass Company. Beautiful, durable glassware made from recycled wine bottles at a plant in Wisconsin. We've had a set of their glasses for years and just love them.
Additional adds:
Eye of Horus Metaphysical Books - books, herbs, candles, classes - everything a neophyte or established Pagan could want.
Salty Tart Bakery - Award-winning and scrumptious bakery in the Midtown Global Market
DreamHaven Books, Comics and Art - which about covers it. SF/F/H bookstore and comic shop.
Northern Sun Merchandising - tshirts, bumperstickers, calendars, etc. for political progressives. for my knitter/GOTR friends, check out this shirt.
Southside Farm Store - pet food and supplies, toys, bird seed, gardening stuff, etc. And often, gorgeous kitties up for adoption.
Covet Consignment and Design - Home furnishing, art and framing. Well-worth checking out!
SubText and Addendum Bookstore - Lovely little general interest bookstore in the front, YA bookstore in the back. They host a lot of great events.
The Goddess of Glass and Friends - Local artists, custom stained glass work, windows and classes.
Mother Earth Gardens - organic plants, gardening supplies, Christmas trees and fun decorative stuff
Rebcca Abas Dance instructor - Dance classes, workshops, etc.
Events:
Winter Walk - Northfield, MN. Downtown shopping event on December 12.
Minnesota Women's Art Festival, also December 12th. Minneapolis YWCA on Lake Street. Art and music event with a wide range of items available, much of it of spectacular quality. We go to this one every year.
