I was home sick last night so I finally got around to reading the things I picked up at the MN Comic Book Association's Spring Con. I went last month with a friend who's not a comics fan, but who also wanted to go hear the amazing Trina Robbins (feminist comics historian and longtime comics writer). Robbins was doing a panel with Amy Reeder and Elizabeth Berube, which was pretty interesting. In the course of perambulation about the building, I picked up the following:
- "Impure Blood," a steampunk comic that started on the web. http://impurebloodwebcomic.com/Pages/store.html
Nice artwork, interesting characters and compelling story line, so I look forward to more of this one. Action scenes are a tad murky and hard to follow, at least in the graphic novel version, so hopefully that improves over time.
- The Womanthology Sketchbook. http://womanthology.blogspot.com/2013/06/womanthology-space.html?m=1
This is a collection of drafts and sketches by some of the artists in the original anthology. It whetted my interest so I'll need to track down the book.
- 2 copies of Trina Robbin's "Honey West" comics (same ocelot-owning female detective protagonist from the 1960s TV show). Artwork is pretty, story didn't completely grab me. http://www.trinarobbins.com/Trina_Robbins/Honey_West.html
- "Halloween Eve" drawn by Amy Reeder. http://www.imagecomics.com/news/225/
On the one hand, yay for an African-American female protagonist, on the other, the storyline is something of a head scratcher. This should be at least another book for development. The art kicks ass though.

I also talked my friend into picking up Robbin's exquisite "Brinkley Girls", Theo Nicole Lorenz's "Fat Ladies in Spaaaaace!" Coloring Book (http://nicolelorenz.com/coloringbooks/) and some work by Darla Ecklund and the "Godseeker" graphic novel (http://godseekercomic.com/about/).

And I polished off the rest of "Digger" last night and want there to be more. There is an Kickstarter out here for the omnibus version, BTW -http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1234535943/digger-omnibus
And seriously, if you read indie comics, you should be reading this one because it is awesome.
