Yay! Khimairal Ink Magazine which describes itself as "devoted to fiction that celebrates strong female ideals and the feminist spirit," just accepted my story "Spell, Book and Candle." It'll be in the January, 2008 edition. V. pleased and having a decently good year on the nonsmut writing if I do say so myself. SPC is another nonsmut fantasy story. You can check out the current edition of Khimairal at

Almost makes up for having to rebuild my website from scratch (it was on the stolen laptop and saving the code is not enough for iWeb to work with. Urgh.). :-)

Wow!

You go girl!
The title is interesting... I loved the play "Bell, Book, and Candle", is it a take off, or a coincidence?

new acceptance

Congratulations, but do they really only pay $5 per story? If so, I hope this story eventually circulates in more lucrative places.

Nope, it was a deliberate choice. Good catch! It starts out in a similar place then goes somewhere else. I always liked the movie, just not the ending.

Welcome the fabulous world of sf/f publishing! :-) At least as far as it applies to short fiction. Basically, there are a couple of big markets which focus on specific areas and/or usually only publish award winning writers. Then there's everyone else. Everyone else caters to different niche markets so the intrepid writer gets to go forth and decide whether it's about the bucks or the glory. Getting it here gives me a shot at the Spectrum Awards and the possibility of some publisher attention I'm thinking of cultivating. It's not impossible to sell lesbian stuff to the nonqueer markets but they're usually looking for a specific kind of story. It is alas, more weirdly complicated than the smut markets and a lot more competitive. This story is something that shot down elsewhere but which will probably get me more publicity than if it had sold in the original market for more money.

Yes the ending was quite depressing. My mom said that the movie was where they got the idea for Bewitched. I never knew if this was true or not, but it made me go find the play and read it.

Publishing, it's kooky!

And that in a nutshell is why, when someone comes in the store and ask "How do I get published?", I politely say, "I don't know, we just sell the stuff". (And then invite them to the next reading at the store, so they can quiz the pros.)

Also, hooray for you!

Congrats. May I borrow your word "nonsmut"?

Thanks! I always thought that selling my soul to the powers of pure evil had something to do with it, but then I think I'd be doing better. Or so one would hope. :-)

Of course you may.:-)
I have friends who only read my stories with sex in them and friends who will only read the other kind. Generally, there's been a lot more smut than otherwise, but that seems to be changing.
