The trip thus far...
Mar. 19th, 2013 07:58 amSo I made it to New York, after numerous adventures. It was snowing hard in Minneapolis yesterday morning but we were told the plane would be on time. And it might have been, if the pilots hadn't been snowed in in Fargo. So they rang up the substitute pilots, who then got stranded in snow traffic in Minneapolis. When they turned up, LaGuardia Airport announced that they had snow and gale force winds and wouldn't clear us for takeoff. Eventually, we left about three hours late. The pilots managed to get back an hour and change of that, but then everyone still had missed flights and so forth. I will say that both the plane staff and the passengers were reasonably good humored about the whole thing, so it was nowhere near as awful as it could have been.
The cab ride to the hotel was also exciting. Nothing says "fun" like rush hour freeway traffic in NYC in the snow. Things really picked up when our cabbie hit the streets. No lane? No problem. I closed my eyes for a fair amount of the trip, but was paying attention for the brief period of time that he was actually driving on the sidewalk. At any rate, we survived unscathed, as did the pedestrians on the sidewalk.
Last night's dinner was the fabulous Palo Santo Restaurant in Park Slope, Brooklyn. This is a really nice Latin American fusion place we discovered on a previous trip. Dinner was excellent, which helped alot as we slogged back through the slush to the hotel.
Today's adventure is taping tonight's (tomorrow morning, really) episode of Hour of the Wolf with host Jim Freund. Hour of the Wolf is a radio show with an sfnal news, interviews and music theme that's been running on WBAI (99.5 FM) since 1974 or so (the original board included Joanna Russ, Samuel Delany and Theodore Sturgeon). Jim is also one of the folks who puts on the New York Review of Science Fiction Reading Series in the city. I'm very excited about this - I'll be debuting a little bit of Blood Moon, Silver Moon's sequel, when the show broadcasts at 1:30AM 3/20/13. I think there's webstreaming and it will be archived at the link above. It should be entertaining, with any luck.
