Weekend writeup plus BiSciFi
Aug. 19th, 2012 10:02 amYesterday was spent cleaning out the basement of donations to Savers, then starting to prep the porch for painting, with huge amounts of help from snurri. We got it cleaned, the old adhesive from the insulation plastic removed and many holes spackled, But there's still a mammoth amount of chipping paint to get scraped off, not to mention caulking. Getting some trisodium phosphate today, on the sound advice of my friends Victor and David, for cleanup and to reduce the possibility of lead dust before any scraping begins. But we got a start, which is more than Jana and I have managed on the porch in the thirteen years we've owned the house.
After that, I went off to Kelly McCullough's birthday/book release party, which was quite pleasant. Kelly and I talked about marketing and writing faster and more productively (a topic on which he knows more than most other writers). I chatted with critic and scholar Michael Levy and Victor Raymond about the state of fandom, cons, getting people to read beyond the presumed canon and sundry other topics. I also talked to Sean Murphy, Ben Zvan and Stephanie Zvan about atheism, religion and belief (Stef, along with doing a lot of blogging about science and sexism and other important topics, has an essay in the new book Atheist Voices of Minnesota. And no, I'm not an atheist, but I know quite a few).
Today, I'm going to try and get some writing in. Then I'm off the BiSciFi Roundtable at the Open Book at 2PM. From the Facebook:
REMINDER - Bisexual Science Fiction Roundtable
Sunday, Aug. 19, 2 p.m. @ Open Book, Minneapolis
This gathering is for all bi/pan/queer/fluid/poly/ genderqueer speculative fiction readers, writers, viewers, and fans - What books/films/tv have been most important for you and why? What roles have science fiction and fantasy media played in your life? What inspires or infuriates you in cultural depictions of fluid sexuality? Come to the Roundtable for a fun, lively – and hopefully geeky – discussion of your favorite topics!
Then back home for tidying, finishing up my draft for my Outlook Columbus interview and prepping for a job interview tomorrow morning.
