As has been reported elsewhere with great thoughtfulness (see http://m.zdnet.com/blog/violetblue/paypal-strong-arms-indie-ebook-publishers-over-erotic-content/1097 as an example), Paypal has strong-armed several prominent e-distributors including Smashwords and All Romance Ebooks to change their terms of service. What this means is that these distributors will no longer carry certain kinds of erotica. This includes, but may not be limited to, anything that can be interpreted as age play, bestiality (shapeshifters are safe for the moment), and most forms of noncon, including fictional scenes between consenting adults. For those who remember Amazon's Great Gay/Lesbian Erotica or Things that Look like It delisting fiasco from a few years back, it's not too hard to draw parallels. And Paypal's role as Morality Police does not extend to not allowing antigay hate groups to use it to gather funds (see SpeakOut.com for some recent campaigns). So here we are. I'm waiting to see if my erotica collections will be affected. I haven't done age play or anything that could be read as bestiality, nor much that classifies as nonconsensual erotica. But I have written some BDSM and most of my erotica is queer erotica; an educated guess suggests that if Paypal succeeds in partitioning off "good"'erotica and "bad" erotica, that may be next. In the meantime, I'll be exploring some alternatives to using Paypal. And writing letters.
