Jana and I celebrated 18 years together this weekend. We've been married for slightly over 2 years, thanks to progressive justices in Iowa. Here in the Twin Cities, we're registered domestic partners, which means the city acknowledges we exist and we have hospital visitation rights. Unless one of us is in a Catholic hospital, as I believe they claim an oppression...er, religious exemption. If I worked for a company that insured domestic partners, I could pay lots more than my straight co-workers to have my spouse on my insurance. As is, it's not an option. We've got wills, own our house as joint tenants and have living wills set up. And it's still not enough. Our legal standing, such as it is, depends on who's in power and what special interests they answer to, as a rule. Any of our blood relatives can challenge our wills or anything else about our relationship, for that matter, and have the full support of our legal system.
If the amendment to the MN Constitution defining marriage as solely between a man and a woman passes it will get much worse. We'll lose what legal standing we have (and for the record, hate crimes go way up every time one of these things is on the ballot) and might have to leave to live somewhere more progressive. We like it here and we'd like to stay. If you agree, please support MN United for all Families - http://www.mnunited.org/
Please vote No. Help us celebrate 19 years in Minnesota next year.
