Marscon was the usual mad-cap social whirl, at least relative to what life has been like lately. I met some friends for dinner at the hotel restaurant (where nothing dire occurred - almost a first at this establishment), then it was off to moderate "Rhythms, Rituals and Magical Helpers". Some interesting discussion ensued about world building, different kinds of magic, and the impact of magic on plot and characters. From there it was on to Kruschenko's for some chatting. I made it an early night since I'm still somewhat under the weather.

Saturday was the Broad Universe RFR at noon. Everyone did a fine job and I'm looking forward to reading new works by Anna Waltz, Lyda Morehouse and Kathryn Sullivan. A brief interlude followed, then I moderated the "Spell, Book and Candle." This one was a lot more free form than my other panel. I recruited Jason Wittman since we were down one panelist and he had some thoughts on the subject of magic users. From there, it was on to the art show, where I acquired a very nice green pen and my pals contemplated future purchases. At the Dealer's Room, I persuaded Jamie Turnball to purchase The War for the Oaks by Emma Bull (required reading for anyone living in the Minneapolis area) and Titan by John Varley after he expressed an amusing desire to learn from my age and experience. I did not use the word "whippersnapper" by way of response, nor poke him with my walker, though mildly tempted.
We gathered a large group for dinner, then drove into the hinterlands of the suburbs for Chinese food that Sheila had heard about. Dinner was quite pleasant, and from thence it was back to the hotel to get me into my steampunk costume.

Shari, Steve and Sondra volunteered their room, and in Shari and Sondra's case, assistance in getting me laced into my corset once the rest of the outfit was donned.. This was something of an ordeal, given my cold and all, not to mention the logistics of getting me into a steel-boned, reinforced corset with grommets in the front and laces in the back. Eventually, with enthusiastic participation by the aforementioned, plus Rebecca and cheering from Sheila (it takes a village to get me outfitted), the deed was done, and like a ship in full sail, I was launched onto the masquerade in hall costume mode. Unfortunately, the masquerade was quite short (we were only 15 minutes late) so we were in time to catch 1970s movies trailers. We still had fun and
Scoundrelle's handiwork (my outfit) was much admired. We also did a sweep of the party floor and wound up at Kruschenko's once more. I had chatted up a few friends until folks began to crash and I had to go get unlaced so I could drive Rebecca and myself back to our respective homes.

Sunday, I was back for "Ask a Writer" with Michael Merriam, Roy Clark and Anna Waltz. We fired off a lot of bits of advice and shared our experiences with editing and contest judging as well as writing with a small but enthusiastic audience. There was more socializing before I had to depart to run errands. And there was an Elise sighting, which was lovely. Once again, another fine Marscon.

Now I'm home trying to prep for my trip to Atlanta in May as well as a few other things. I'm hoping to get a book read and blurbed this week as well as making progress on projects before next Friday's reading at DreamHaven.
