NY continued
Feb. 14th, 2011 08:36 pmYesterday afternoon, Jana and I strolled by my old evangelical Lutheran elementary school. I had heard it had been turned into a mosque, but this, alas, proved to be untrue. Pity. It could only have been an improvement. Then we went on to see "The King's Speech" (2nd time for us). Mom found it mildly amusing but I think the shrieking kiddies running about from the Justin Bieber film down the (not sound proofed) hall did not enhance the experience. Likewise, the elderly woman in front of us who left, came back, and insisted that the man sitting in the row ahead of her had taken her seat. The debate went on for awhile. During the actual speech, which does sort mean that one loses the point of the film. Afterward, we were off to dinner for my mom's birthday. The rest of the original dinner crew was unable to attend for various transportation and related reasons, so it was just us. The restaurant was having a Valentine's Day thing, 2 days early and quite over priced. Dinner was...not good. It was a long evening.
Today, it was off to The Metropolitan Museum because I go there every time I'm in town. It was my refuge during my unhappy preteen and teen years, back when it was a lot less crowded. At any rate, we took in the Tiffany windows and the Temple of Dendor, then had a classic moment.
Me: "I have to go look at Arms and Armor again. It's research!"
J: "Medieval leather caskets and boxes! I have to go look at them. It's research!"
We bolt in opposite directions.
We also managed to take in Rosa Bonheur's "The Horse Fair," which really has to be seen in person to truly appreciate it, a couple of Louise Vigee-LeBrun paintings (I adore her work), some spectacular furniture and an Artemisia Gentileschi painting I'd never seen before. And the gift shop and tea. Mom joined us and we checked out a few more paintings (Jana is a big fan of Ingres) and some beautiful sculptures, then off to a much better dinner than last night's.
Tomorrow, the Museum of Natural History and the Planetarium are on the docket. I'm a sucker for a good planetarium show. Still hoping to get to the Village, but it's colder than we expected and we didn't bring enough warm clothes for a bunch of walking around. So we'll see how that goes.
In the meantime, Hellebore and Rue has sold its first copy (huzzah),and I have my Marscon schedule and my CONvergence panel line-up already. More on those when I get home.
