Which was fun as always. For those of you who've never been, Heart of the Beast Puppet Theater hosts a huge annual puppet parade and pageant the first Sunday in May. Community members come down to the HOBT Theater and build fabulous costumes and puppets from various donated scraps of things. The end result is a big Pagan/Hippie/Lefty/ Multicultural that culminates in Powderhorn Park with 40,000 people or so dancing and drumming to welcome the sun back (this takes the form of a big paper mache sun mounted on canoes being rowed across the lake). It is our number one reason to keep living in south Minneapolis (even though we live in Bancroft which is south of Powerhorn).

We're still trying to decide if it makes more or less sense if you actually read the program first. Apart from that, we loved the blue whale puppet and the Aztec Dancers, and savored the irony of having Minnesota Atheists marching just in front of the Cristo Rey Jesuit School contingent in the Free Speech Section. A lot of the skeleton and tiger puppets were also pretty spectacular and we got to wish Margaret Anderson Kelliher (in the running to be Minnesota's first woman governor) "Happy May Day." We ran into friends we'd hoped to find down at Powderhorn Park as we were eating lunch from 9 to 5 Beats Ten to Life (ex-offenders employment project with excellent food), and we lasted long enough to welcome the sun back as it got rowed across the lake. Yay! It's officially Spring! :-)

And a random piece of coolness about Powderhorn: local photographers are documenting the neighborhood out here at the Powderhorn365 project.  Just found this via Barth Anderson and am very excited about it.
