Sunday afternoon odds and ends...
Oct. 5th, 2008 12:38 pmNew Haunted Hearths author mini-interview posted on Myspace; this week it's the prolific M. Christian - http://blog.myspace.com/hauntedhearths Check it out and friend us. Oh yeah, and please buy the book if so moved and you haven't already. :-D
The week's activities - Went to see Frank Theaters' production of Caryl Churchill's play "Vinegar Tom" on Thursday. VT is Churchill's take on witch trials and the kind of women who ended up being executed as witches. The performances were quite spectacular and the play was thought-provoking but the musical interludes didn't work for us. Apart from that, it was an excellent production and we would definitely check out more of Frank Theater's stuff. That said, it also could have been better attended. Speaking of which, Frank (http://www.franktheatre.org/) is unusual is being a theater which is both run by a woman (Wendy Knox) and stages plays by women. Not exclusively, but often. Other Twin Cities theaters which have an excellent to good track record on women playwrights and directors include Theater Unbound (www.theatreunbound.com/index.html), Bedlam (www.bedlamtheatre.org), Mixed Blood (www.mixedblood.com/), Pillsbury House (http://www.puc-mn.org/PillsburyHouseTheatre/tabid/218/Default.aspx) and the Playwright's Center (www.pwcenter.org/lab.php). Not coincidentally, these are also some of the theaters with the most diverse range of playwrights and productions. Notice that the Guthrie is not included, seeing as its track record is abysmal. The Guthrie even made the Guerrilla Girls Girlcott list for 2007-08 - www.guerrillagirlsontour.com/monkeybusiness.htm. Go, Joe Dowling! :-(
Check out the following site for some fun statistics on women in the theater and film - www.womenarts.org/swan/employment.htm, then go see a play at one of the more diverse theaters in town. Their productions are often better and certainly more interesting than anything I've even seen or read about at the "IKEA downtown."
Off soapbox now. Going to go write for a bit, then off to go see Voltaire (the Goth singer/songwriter, not the French playwright) with Matt (mr-bad-example.livejournal.com/ ) tonight.
