Last night, the beauteous Rebecca and I went to go hear the current gen of Sisterspit, the all women spoken word touring group (http://sisterspitnextgen.com/fall07/home.html) at our local queer (mostly women's) bar, Pi Bar and Restaurant. Michelle Tea, Meliza Banales, the Texta Queen, Tara Jepsen, Dexter Flowers, Chelsea Starr and Kat Marie Yoas told entertaining stories (everyone) and showed remarkably detail artwork done with Australian magic markers (texta paintings by the Texta Queen). Some pieces worked better than others, of course; we liked Meliza Banales, Chelsea Starr, Kat Yoas and the Texta Queen best but everyone was pretty good. I was expecting more poetry and got more prose readings but, apart from one or two pieces running long, it was well worth checking out (they're on tour for the next month or so - tour schedule's on the website so they may be in your town soon).

I like hearing other writers read, especially if they do it well. It's a great way to pick up tips for doing it better yourself. Plus if they're from either coast and don't get out here much, there's the added bonus of watching them absorb the concept that there's this big space between the oceans, with, like, stuff in it. And I say this as a transplanted Brooklynite. :-)

Speaking of which, I'm doing my last reading of the year on Friday Nov. 16th, at 8PM. Not sure where yet but we're working on it. The line up is Eve Cain, newly published erotic romance writer, an erotic poet who goes by Lady Carol (I think -haven't actually met her yet) and the ever popular TBD. Should be fun and I'll update as soon as I have the details.

This will complete a year in which I have done more readings than ever before. The full tally:
Marscon; WisCon (2 readings - thank you, Elise!); DreamHaven Books, Comics and Art; Amazon Feminist Bookstore; "In the Flesh" at the Happy Ending Lounge in NYC; Outwrite Bookstore and Cafe in Atlanta; and now, TBD. Plus panels at Convergence and Diversicon, and just hanging out at Saints and Sinners in NOLA. Whew!
