I'm back from Atlanta and still a bit groggy.
It was a hopping and lively trip. The Thursday night reading at the gorgeous and well-stocked Outwrite Bookstore and Coffeehouse (http://www.outwritebooks.com/NASApp/store/IndexJsp) went reasonably well. The store and cafe staff were lovely to work with. May I just say that I envy Atlanta Outwrite and Charis Books and More (http://charis.booksense.com/NASApp/store/IndexJsp)? What wonderful bookstores! Needless to say, between them and the dealer's room at the con, I came home with way more books than I intended.
Also recommended: the Elegance Boutique in Little 5 Points (http://eleganceatlanta.com/). They design and create their own clothing, accessories and jewelry, all of it worth checking out. I acquired an amazing red sheath dress and matching jacket in a shiny fabric that resembles scales (not my normal type of outfit by any means, but a big hit at the con on Saturday night :-) and a couple of pairs of gorgeous earrings. I got to sashay about feeling like a red dragon, which was something new and different.
Apart from this, I saw some old friends including Selina Rosen and Lee Martindale, as well as my friend Mark and his partner Lawrence and some others. Don't get to see those folks anywhere near as much as I'd like to. I also hung out with my editor/publisher/pal/etc. Steve, chatted with Rob Gates and Jim Grimsley and met some very fun new folks like Laura Underwood. One of my panels was a decently good time and well attended while the other was low on attendance but high on participation. I also got to go to several other events and panels, including the Spectrum Awards and a performance by LotSix, a queer performance artist from Philadelphia (http://www.lotsix.info/bio.htm).
My main criticism of the convention was that it would have been nice to see more women in attendance; hopefully that balance changes a bit when the convention moves to Washington, D.C. next year (http://www.gaylaxicon2008.org/index.html). I'm looking forward to doing it again.
In related news, the "Qspec Sampler 2007" collection of GLBT fiction is now available (http://www.amazon.com/QSpec-Sampler-2007-Don-Sakers/dp/1934754005/ref=sr_1_10/104-1086854-7471144?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1191877780&sr=1-10). It includes my story "A Winter's Tale" as well as stories and novel excerpts from a number of other talented folks such as Melissa Scott, Lawrence Schimel, Selina Rosen, Joel A. Nichols and Laura J. Underwood. Where else are you going to get GLBT quality sf/f for $5.00? Check it out.
