Diversicon schedule and minirant

So here's where I'll be while obsessing about home safety issues. You can come by and commiserate if you like. :-) Or ply me with chocolate, which is better. The f***rs stole my beloved insulated lunch sack with the dragonflies embroidered on it. Found that out this morning.
Here's hoping the convention makes things better!

and electro-celluloid media. Rachel Kronick, mod.; Catherine Lundoff

Saturday, August 4, 2007 CE:

11:00-11:50 AM Krushenko?s (Concierge)

things can go wrong? Discussion boards?good, bad, or dependent on how

Sunday, August 5, 2007 CE:

Noon-12:50 PM Regent/Waldorf
Panel: Marion Zimmer Bradley: Robert Heinlein for Women?
MZB's books were the ones we turned to when we were shy 13-and
14-year-olds looking for strong female characters and situations we
could imagine ourselves into. For some of us, the Free Amazons of
Darkover were the first positive portrayals of feminists and queer
women that we read in SF. So is that enough to make her the equivalent
of Heinlein for the other half of the fen population? Catherine
Lundoff, mod.; Terry A. Garey, Rebecca Marjesdatter, Joan Marie Verba

3:00-3:50 PM Regent/Waldorf
Panel: Old School: YA Fantasy Before Harry Potter
The precursors to Hogwarts are many and varied, and deserving of a
much wider audience than they generally get today. E. Nesbit, Edward
Eager, Mary Norton, Margot Benary-Isbert, the list goes on. Let's talk
about pre-H.P. kid's books that are worth a reread. Catherine Lundoff,
mod.; Ruth Berman, Terry A. Garey, P.M.F. Johnson, Rebecca Marjesdatter

hmph. for me, the equivalent of heinlein was heinlein. when i was old enough to search out strong female characters in particular, i did start reading mzb's sword and sorcery anthologies, though. well, until i noticed they kept having the same story in them over and over and over again. she publishes a very particular subgenre of s&s about women in those. i mean, not that it is a subgenre, but that she publishes a subgenre of that subgenre.

i could write more confusing sentences here, but i won't. ;)

sadly, probably no me at diversicon. it looks like fun, but not only is it the weekend between paychecks it's the weekend between paychecks when i just paid the mortgage. it's mortgage week when i most miss being partnered, i tell you...

First of all, are you okay?

Assuming you are, truthfully, I think they're both writers that you appreciate more if you read them as a teenager than you ever could as an adult. I think that MZB does hold an analogous mythic place in her own way. And the cult of Bobby really irritates me so this is also payback. :-)
Re: Diversicon. You could come down and meet us for dinner on Saturday and or do the party scene, such as it is. It'd be nice to hang out.

I have two embroidered lunch boxes, one burnt orange with a moose, one electric blue with a lizard. You're welcome to borrow either one.

Thanks, hon! I just ordered a new one, black with dragonflies. I figure it'll make me feel slightly better but I appreciate the offer.
